1126 cover image1862: Washington 3 ¢. rose, used on an envelope, from Waterbury, Connecticut to Maine, dated 17 August 1866, tied by the rare Waterbury "FISH" fancy cork cancel in black (Rohloff A-12). Second day of recorded use. William T. Crowe records eleven covers used between 16th - 31th August 1866. Note: The Waterbury fancy 'Fish' cancel is one of the hand-carved cork cancellations created in Waterbury, Connecticut by Postal clerk/Postmaster John W. Hill in the 1860s–70s, part of the celebrated “Waterbury fancy cancels” series. Hill carved dozens of pictorial killers (animals, people, symbols) and used them briefly, which is why they’re rare and avidly collected. Ex.
