Post of the Government of Mount Lebanon / Mutasserifieh of Djebel Lubnan 1861/62: Front and part back of cover to Zahle struck with "HUKUMATI POSTA CEBEL-I LUBNAN" negative seal handstamp (Post of the Governate of Mount
Lebanon) in black (Coles & Walker fig. 43, Ziya fig. 1 - rated 'RRR'). An extremely rare cover with just three such known. Note: In 1860 a Civil War between Druze and Christians in Lebanon caused the French to intercede and help restore order.
They subsequently influenced the Sultan to establish the Mutasserifieh of Djebel Lubnan on May 10, 1861 as an autonomous region with a Christian governor reporting directly the Consstantinople. The first Governor was Daoud Pacha who had been the
Posts & Telegraphs Director in the capital. The seat of this Government was Deir el Kamar. A local post was started which probably only lasted until the introduction of Turkish postage stamps in late 1862 (Image 1)

house which ran until the turn of the 19th century. The Mission had its own Post Office, from which two negative seals are known (see next lot). The Post Office closed in the early 1900's after which mail was sent via the main Broumanna Post Office
