MacCarthy, 4th Regt.", tied by "11" circular numeral handstamp with UTRECHT / Z.A.R. cds below (March 19) in black. Reverse with crested flap of the "IV The King's Own Royal Regiment". London arrival (June 24) on reverse, slight restorable opening tears at top but a fine and early franking. Note: Mail from Maj-General Newdigate's Second Division or Colonel Wood's Flying Column, the force that entered Zululand from the Transvaal, entered the civilian mails at Utrecht and was then forwarded via Durban. 90223 piece imageParcel Post 1885: £5 deep green, 10 shilling dull chestnut, 5 shilling slate, 3 pence mauve and ½ penny grey, all of good colour, perforations mainly fine, tied by triangular parcel handstamp “Z A R 60” to a parcel tag sent registered with two oval “R / Z.A.R." marks. Manuscript notation in red ink indicating weight and postage fee (gold shipment). Reverse, cds “PELGRIMSBUST Z.A.R. 16 MEI 95”. Heavy creasing as is often the case with parcel tag; the £5 with corner bend. Rare; only £5 sterling stamp reported in payment of postage in the British Empire. 90224 cover image1896: Arms, 1 shilling ochre & green, horizontal strip of three, fresh colour and perforations mainly fine, tied by squared circle “JOHANNESBURG 12 OCT 1899” to a complete telegram form with additional strike of the Johannesburg squared circle validating top, with circular violet “TELEGRAAF KANTOOR, JOHANNESBURG 1”. Message sent to London regarding payment of four thousand pounds. Sent the day before the Anglo-Boer War and last instruction on the message is; “code messages not allowed.”. Some small tears to right side to be expected and tiny nick into top of third stamp. Fine survivor. Intriguing message (Image 1)

Reverse, transit cds “SOUTHAMPTON P.O. OC 17 94” and arrival cds “BOURNEMOUTH S.O. 18 OC 94”. Fine. Scarce parcel post envelope with pencil parcel number on the reverse (1233). Additionally, comes with large part of a newspaper wrapper sent to Demerara (British Guiana) franked with three 1882 hand surcharged “1d” in red on 6d green tied by cds “TRINIDAD MR 19 83”. 90228 cover image1882: Surcharged “ONE PENNY” in black on rosy-carmine vertical pair and a ½ penny bisect, all of good colour and perforations, tied by cds “TRINIDAD NO 27 82” to an envelope sent to Barbados, with an additional strike alongside. Reverse, arrival cds “BARBADOS NO 29 1882” in black. Minor soiling. Well-preserved for this region. Fine and scarce usage. Note: One of the few instances in the Americas where the base rate was appropriate given the distance to the destination (Barbados). The 1 penny values were overprinted to comply with the UPU regulations for stamps to bear a value - in numbers - not words (Image 1) (Image 2)

90229 imagePostal Notice 1884: Trinidad General Post Office Memorandum (209 x 340 mm.) pertaining to the issue of the first Postage Due stamps. The text describes the mechanism and protocol for charging unpaid or insufficiently paid mail items. Dated 17 November 1884 and headed-up Port of Spain, it is signed by the Postmaster-General and has a sample 1 d. black postage due stamp affixed and tied by cds “TRINIDAD NO 17 84” in black. Some minor climatic discolouration and imperfections. Has been folded vertically and horizontally, as would be expected. Scarce. Important document. Provenance: Collection Sir John B.
