PUTNAM / GENERAL COMMISSION MERCHANT" cachet in blue and BELIZE despatch cds (Jan 12, 1868) in black. 90123 cover image1878: Stationery postal card 1½ pence brown, used with the barred oval “0”, sent to Germany, dated to reverse “11 March 1882”, with transit cds “LONDON AP 4 82”, as well as “Contrary to regulations / F.B.” boxed instructional and manuscript “Returned” in red; on account of the sender's cachet “H. Edw. Oswald” being applied to the front, which the British PO deemed prohibited. Faint central crease. Scarce and unusual. (H&G 1)Note: Posted in the colony of British Honduras (now Belize) to Germany and returned in transit to the postal administration of origin. This being an unusual enforcement of an interpretation of a UPU rule. Whilst the British enforced this rule domestically, it ignored the volumes of incoming mail from the European continent that violated the British interpretation of the UPU rule, which it could have logically charged deficient franking as a letter. 269 (*) image1915/16: Mount Athos, ½ d. dark green, 1 d. red, 2½ d. in two different colours, 4½ d. yellow, 6 d. violet, and 1 s. light brown, a series of seven different stamps in two different sizes with inscriptions in English, Russian, and Greek, each value in a unused horizontal or vertical pair. Note: This issue is unusual in a number of respects, they were produced in a photographic process (in sheets of twelve for each value) on board the H.M. Aircraft Carrier 'Ark Royal' during World War I. These came about because of a planned allied takeover of the Holy Mountain District of Mount Athos, and were prepared to be used at the local post office. When the military project was abandoned these issues were not used for their intended purpose, but nearly all of the stamps were destroyed making them extremely rare. The British naval officer responsible for the project, Lt. Commander Harry Pirie-Gordon prepared also a Greek "AGION OROS / 25.1.1916" two-line datestamp (the intended day of issue) and the lot includes a 1 d. adhesive cancelled in this manner (Image 1) (Image 2)

7003 cover imageBritish Courier Post from Damascus to Beirut 1835: Second sheet of entire letter from Mr. Jean-Baptiste Baudin, the French agent consulaire in Damascus directed to the Consul de France in Acre, at that time in Beirut, using a postal service organized by the British consul-general in Damascus, Mr. Farren, the cover struck by crisp bilingual intaglio „DAMASCUS POST BRIT. CON. GEN. SYRIA / Poste Consulaire Générale Anglaise du Pays de Sham“ seal. On obverse handwritten "No. 13" and "2 ¾" (piastres). Some acid ink imperfections, nevertheless an immaculate strike of this extremely rare handstamp, cert. RPS (2004). Notes: In 1835 the British Consul-General for Syria, Mr. John William Perry Farren was maintaining a Dromedary Post between Damascus and Al Heet in the south of the country, and a communication by post between Damascus and Beirut. The British had to reorganize their activity in the Levant after the Peace Agreement of Kütahya in 1833, when the Ottoman provinces of Adana and Syria had become part of Egypt, and Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt became governor-general of the two provinces. John William Perry Farren was the British Consul-General for Syria, located in Damascus from August 1830 to September 1837. Sent by Mr. Jean-Baptiste Baudin (1788-1848), born in Marseille but living in Syria nearly all his live. He settled in Damascus around 1825 as a merchant and even had a shop in the Khan Assad Pasha; he was apparently the only European established in Damascus at that time. He then represented the interests of foreign merchants and he even managed the affairs of the French, Austrian and Russian consulates. He later became the agent of the only French consul in Beirut. In 1839, a French consulate was established in Damascus. Finally, he would have been one of the first victims of the cholera epidemic which struck the city in July 1848. Directed to Henry Guys (1787-1877), Consul de France de St. Jean d‘Acre et dependances à Beyrouth. Henry Guys came from a French family of French diplomates. He was consul in Alger in 1818, thereafter in Aleppo, Beirut and finally in St. Jean d’Acre, the French name of Akkon, today in Israel. It seems that he lived in Beirut, where he had married in 1824.
