10604 cover imageColoridos 1861: 280 reis red, a used example with large margins all round, used on 1867 cover from Pernambuco to Brunswick, Germany, marked in manusctipt for double rate in blue crayon; tied by French Maritime "Anchor" lozenge of dots in black with circular "PERNAMBOUC / PAQ. FR. J No 3" circular datestamp (Sept 30) at right (Salles fig. 1085) and carried on steamer "Estramadure". Underpaid for double rate and struck with framed "AFFRANCHISEMENT / INSUFFISANT" in red and, in Paris with "F / 48" Franco-German Accountancy marking in black (Van der Linden fig. 1184) and charged 17 groschen on arrival in blue crayon. Closed tear on face panel and and flap restored on reverse but a remarkable cover to an unusual destination (Image 1) (Image 2)

10605 bof imageColoridos 1861: 430 r. yellow, a used block of four, of fine fresh colour on cream paper, ample margins all round, cancelled by two strikes of french type "PERNAMBUCO" circular datestamps (30 June 1867) in black. Tiny top left corner repair and ironed diagonal bend mentioned for full accuracy and not affecting the appearance, an extraordinarily rare and most attractive multiple, the second largest recorded. 90251 cover image1850: Goat's Eye, 60 reis black, grey paper, bottom marginal block of ten, deep shade and fresh colour, touch top of one stamp otherwise good to large margins all around, tied by manuscript “Sao Franco. Do Sul” (S. Catarina) and dated “9 1856 1” (I Jan 56) to the back of a large envelope sent to Glauchau, Germany, with transit cds “RIO DE JANEIRO 5 2 56” (5 Feb) in black and a London cds “19 MR 1856” alongside “SEEBRIEF PER ENGLAND UND AACHEN 11 3 56” (11 March) both in red. Front, endorsed “Per Steamer via Southampton” and rated in manuscript “6/8” (British) in black and “85” (German) in blue. The usual wrinkles and mild creasing, the adhesives remarkably fresh. 90253A cover image1866: Dom Pedro II 20 réis red-lilac, strip of three, fresh colour, perforations mainly fine, in combination with high-value Dom Pedro II 500 réis orange, vivid shade, the odd short perforation, used on cover from Pelotas, Brazil to Nova Scotia, dated 8 March 1876, tied by circular cork cancel in black, with neat PELOTAS cds alongside and LONDON PAID transit in red (5 AP 76) accompanied by a manuscript "1½d" red accountancy mark. Reverse, a RIO de JANIERO black cds (16 AP 77) and red NEW YORK / PAID ALL / APR 17 exchange strike. Manuscript “Received Apr 18” docketing to inside. There are two vertical filing folds affecting the middle stamp on the strip and through the 500 r centrally, which has a faint corner fold top right. A very scarce Brazil–Canada transatlantic usage, correctly prepaid in the pre-UPU period with a high-value franking. 90255A cover image1879: Printed Avis de Réception (AR) Form “AVISO” / “ACCUSÉ DE RÉCEPTION”, for a registered letter sent from Joinville, Brazil, to Germany, dated 15 January 1879 to Germany, franked with 1876-77 Dom Pedro II 100 réis green rouletted, deep shade, paying the AR fee, tied by JOINVILLE datestamp. To the top a German 'Vom Auslande / Eingeschrieben' label in red. Reverse with German datestamp and recipient’s manuscript acknowledgment (9 May 1879). Has three vertical and a horizontal crease, as well as corner fold clear of adhesive, and tiny tear left side, to be expected for such a journey. A rare and highly desirable complete AR form, carried across the Atlantic and returned to Brazil. 90257 cover image1879, entire letter from “PERNAMBUCO 6 MARS 79” to New York, sent via packet “City of Pará”, considered unpaid at departure and correctly taxed on arrival with “T” and circular duplex ”NEW YORK APR 6 / DUE 15 CENTS" corresponding to the American Transitional UPU Rate for mail to Brazil (10 cents plus 50% due charge). An extremely fine, most unusual and late usage of a UPU transitional rate (ceased on 1st April 1879)UPU regulations required the postage due to be calculated on the published postage rate in the country of destination, as it would be applicable if mailing a letter to the country of origin (Image 1) (Image 2)
