Verticais 1850: 90 r. black on greyish thin paper, a vertical pair used on reverse of 24 July 1865 entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Porto, Portugal endorsed "per Estramadure", carried outside the mails initially and put
into the post by Forwarding Agent's "Basto & Sobrino / Bahia" with blue oval cachet on reverse. The adhesives with good margins all round but slight stain, cancelled by unclear small circular handstamp in black. "Transatlantico" cds (Aug 14) in
violet and Porto cds in black (Aug 15) and charged '300' reis due to pay upon arrival (Image 1)

fine strike of oval framed "PARAHYBA DO SUL" handstamp (Ayres fig. 1381) with corresponding french type PARAHYBA-DO-SUL cds at left (June 18). Rio arrival cds on reverse of the following day. Weak edge folds but a most attractive and rare cover (Image 1)

Verticais 1850: 300 r. black on greyish thin paper, used in combination with 1866 Dom Pedro 20 r. red-lilac, on underpaid 1871 entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Bordeaux endorsed "per Amazone"; the 300r. with close margins
all round, each stamp tied by segmented cork handstamps in black with Rio cds adjacent (Feb 6). Oval "INSUFICIENTE" handstamp in red as cover found to be double weight and therefore taxed on arrival in Bordeaux (Feb 27) with "16" décime charge mark
