10560 (*) imageInclinados 1844/46: 600 r. black on thin greyish paper, the magnificent unused vertical pair, positions 137 / 146, with full sheet margin at base, with large margins all round and showing portions of two adjoining stamps, of beautiful fresh appearance. Illustrated in "Inclinados" by Bernd Juchert on page 120 and by Walter Taveira on page 280. Pairs are the second largest unused multiples of this stamp. A truly wonderful multiple with an extraordinary provenance. Just four unused pairs recorded, this being, in this describer's opinion, the finest Scott = $ 12'000++. Provenance: Collection Baron Philip Ferrary de la Renotière, Sale 7, Druout, Paris, 6 April 1922, lot 205; collection Alfred H. Caspary, Harmers, New York, 2-5 June 1958, lot 538; collection Josiah K. Lilly, Siegel, New York, 4-5 Dec 1968, lot 75; collection T. Kuyas, SG, Frankfurt, 18 May 1978, lot 293; Christie's, London, 9 May 1990, lot 89; collection Everaldo Santos, Afinsa, Madrid, March 2001, lot 111 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

10561 bof imageInclinados 1844/46: 600 r. grey-black, worn impression on greyish paper, the block of four used on large piece of 1853 "Segura" registered and insured cover, in combination with Verticais 1850 10 r. black in a vertical strip of three and 90 r. black in a vertical strip of three, the unique 600 r. block with large margins on three sides and just shaved at right, all cancelled by circular "CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE / BRAZIL" datestamps (Dec 26) in black. The rate of insurance is noted in manuscript at left of the stamps with the postal clerk noting the three combined values underneath each multiple = 2$700 reis postage paid + 1$000 insurance at 2% covered for a value of 50$000 reis. Small imperfections with vertical crease throught the 600 r. block but of no significance; an astonishing item, being one of two covers known with a combination of the Inclinados and the Verticais issue. Illustrated and discussed in "Inclinados" by Walter Taveira on pages 411-413; also illustrated by Bernd Juchert on page 107 of his cover volume and on page 124 of his multiples handbook. The sole known cover bearing an Inclinador 600 reis and an item of immense rarity and great appeal - the key item of the Inclinados issue. Provenance: Found by Mr. Saturnino of Minas Gerais in 1985 and sold at "Brapex 1985" to Angelo Lima; collection Angelo Lima; collection Everaldo Santos (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
