Crown CC, fresh colour, used on cover from St Helena to Aix-en-Provence, France, dated 12 April 1869, tied by black sunburst circlular cork (Type III - CNA.9), with St Helena red oval despatch datestamp, alongside transit cds in red 'LONDON PAID 7 MAY 69', and French transit datestamps (8 May 69). Manuscript “4” (d.) for British share of postage besides a red oval 'PD'. Reverse with arrival in black (8 May 69). Roughly opened with tears top and base, part of flap missing and tears centrally. 2 d. affected by overlap over edge but a fine combination. Rare and early use of the sunburst cancel. Note: The rate to France was reduced from 1 s. 4 d. per ¼ oz. to 8 d. per ¼ oz. in 1863 and remained at that level until 1870. Provenance: The Yardley Collection (1944); collection Dr. R.H. Crown CC., fresh vibrant colour, good perfoartions, fine appearance, used on a damaged mourning envelope, mailed on-board a ship at St Helena, dated 17 June 1865, cancelled by a fine strike of the 'H' cancellation in black (CNA. 3), with an unusually fine strike in blue of the St Helena oval datestamp, endorsed "On board the "Durham" St Helena June 1865", also a faint London cds in red (JY 18 65). Reverse, transit cds 'STAPLEHURST JY 18 65' and arrival 'TENTERDEN JY 18 65'. Envelope badly damaged at top and leftside/base, with parts missing and restored, vertical filing crease left side, well clean of adhesive, flap missing.
