10525 cover image1843 (Aug 1): 60 reis grey-black, late intermediate impressions, a single and horizontal pair used on 1845 entire letter endorsed "p. Vapor" and carried by sea at double rate from Rio de Janeiro to Rio Grande (Pedrick correspondence), the adhesives all with four margins and the pair slightly overlapping the single which has a closed tear at lower right, the cover with some minor soiling of no importance, tied by rimless "CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE" circular datestamps (March 1) in black. The letter has been affected by damp but exhibits well and is of great rarity, with just two other covers from Rio being recorded with this franking. Illustrated in "Bulls Eyes on Covers" by Bernd Juchert on page 139. Cert. Moorhouse (2013). Provenance: Heinrich Köhler sale 323, Wiesbaden, Jan 2004, lot 45; collection Luis Alemany Indarte, Corinphila sale 181, June 2013, lot 204. Note: Interesting contents for the US Consul "the debate about Texas was going on, but it was generally thought nothing would be done this session of Congress". This turned out be erroneous: as Presidents Tyler and Polk managed to get the joint resolution passed on 1 March 1845, and Texas was admitted into the United States on 29 December 1845 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
