Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
2430 cover image1627 (Dec 27): Magnificent royal decree, written in Madrid, signed by King Philip IV of Spain, with the large royal seal and official paper intact and perfectly preserved. An important historical document addressed to Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, General-in-Chief of the Lombardy army, details financial instructions regarding the pay of Captain and Sergeant Major Juan Díaz Camarano, with references to interim payments made to Lieutenant Joseph de Monpobon. Such appointments formed part of the Spanish Crown’s wider military preparations in Northern Italy on the eve of the War of the Mantuan Succession (1628–1631), a conflict of considerable consequence within the Habsburg dominions and the Thirty Years’ War. The document of historical importance, a choice piece for collectors of royal autographs, Habsburg-Spanish history, and early modern European diplomacy.
