Befördert über Österreich bis Pidwolotschysk, dem Endbahnhof der Karl Ludwig Bahn im damaligen Kronland Galizien, mit rücks. Transitstp. "PODWOLCZYSKA 25 / 5 / 73" und von dort mit russischer Bahnpost No. 74 mit rücks. entspr. Transitstp. und vorders. kyrillischem "ODESSA 10 MAI 1873" nach Simferopol. Vorders. Ankunftsstp. vom 12. Mai julianischen Kalenders. Mit 50 Rp. korrekt bis zum Bestimmungsort freigemacht für einen Brief unter Österreichischer Leitung nach Russland laut Postvertrag vom 26. Juli 1872 mit vorders. notiertem Weiterfranko von "40" Rp. für Österreich resp. "7" Kreuzer für Russland, wobei der österr. Stabstp. "FRANCO" sowie der russische Kreisstp. "OPLACHENO" jeweils die Vorausbezahlung bestätigen. Ein interessantes und attraktives Brieflein auf diesem seltenen Leitweg, geographisch zumindest für Briefe in die Ukraine zwar naheligender, aber auch 5 Rp. teuerer als die gängigere Leitung über Preussen. Attest Eichele (2018). Schäfer: Russland=6/13 Punkten. Anmerkung: Pidwolotschysk lag zwischen der Teilung Polens 1772 und 1918 an der Grenze zwischen Galizien und Russland. Nach dem Bau der "k.k. privilegierten Karl Ludwig Bahn" wurde Pidwolotschysk zum Umsteige- und Umladebahnhof zwischen dieser und der russischen Bahnlinie Brest-Kiew-Odesssa und das bis anhin landwirtschaftlich geprägte Dorf entwickelte sich, beginnend mit dem Bau von Hotels und Lagerhallen, zum Handelszentrum und wichtigsten Grenzübergang zwischen Österreich-Ungarn und Russland. Zu seiner Blütezeit zählte der international bekannte Handelsknotenpunkt alleine 43 Getreidehändler und war als das Klein-Paris des Ostens bekannt. Nachdem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts das russische Bahnnetz immer weiter ausgebaut wurde und sich der Transitverkehr langsam auf andere Strecken zu verlagern begann, verlor Pidwolotschysk seine verkehrs- und handelspolitische Bedeutung bis nach der Jahrhundertwende fast komplett wieder. (Tchilinghirian unrecorded / Cedar catalogue fig. 78, valuation 11). Presumably one of the first letters despatched at the Russian office in Beirut, for a most advanced collection of Beirut. Note: Usage prior to the issuance of Russian Imperial stamps in the Levant from November 1862. 7067 cover imageRussian P.O. in Beirut 1863 (Nov 19): Letter sheet from Beirut to Constantinople, bearing marginal horizontal pair of Russia Imperial Arms 1858 10 kop. brown & blue perf. 12½, tied by rhomboid numeral ‘783’ of Beirut (Tchilinghirian fig 216) with matching "PORT BEIRUT" cds in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 217) on reverse. Some soiling of the stamps, minor paper faults of the letter well away from franking and handstamps, nevertheless a spectacular and extremely attractive full-Arabic entire showing the Port-to-Port rate, rare due to the usage of Russian Imperial adhesives outside Constantinople, unrecorded in Tchilinghirian, one of three covers recorded, cert Buchsbayew (2024).
