2379 cover imageRomanian Royalty – Extraordinary Group of three Autographed letters with original envelopes. Signed by Queen Elisabeta of Romania (1843–1916), Queen Marie of Romania (1875–1938), and King Ferdinand I of Romania (1865–1927). A remarkable and historically significant trio of autograph letters, each accompanied by its original postal cover, all addressed to Madame Marie Greciano in Italy. Together, these items provide a rare glimpse into the private correspondence of three of Romania’s most important royal figures at the turn of the 20th century. 1. Letter from Queen Elisabeta of Wied ("Carmen Sylva"), wife of King Carol I postmarked 27 June 1900, Bucharest – Palat Regal with fine strikes of the royal cancellation. Written in French and signed Elisabeth. The content is deeply personal, reflecting her characteristically emotional and poetic style. Elisabeta (better known by her literary pseudonym Carmen Sylva) was a noted writer and intellectual, and this letter captures her intimate voice of compassion and sentiment. 2. Letter from Princess (later Queen) Marie of Edinburgh, wife of Ferdinand I postmarked 22 July 1900, Castel Pelesch (her favored royal residence in Sinaia). Written in French and signed Marie. The letter conveys warm and personal sentiments, with characteristic vivacity. Marie of Edinburgh, granddaughter of Queen Victoria and Tsar Alexander II, would go on to become one of the most beloved and influential queens of Europe, celebrated for her diplomacy, beauty, and wartime leadership during World War I. 3. Letter from Crown Prince Ferdinand (later King Ferdinand I of Romania) postmarked 2 February 1900, Bucharest – Palat Regal, registered cover. Written in French and signed Ferdinand. The tone is courteous and considerate, offering words of condolence. Ferdinand, who would later ascend the throne in 1914, guided Romania through the First World War, greatly expanding the nation’s territory in the aftermath. Unique convergence of three royal voices in a single year (Image 1) (Image 2)

2290 cover imageAustrian Consular Offices, Galatz; 1864 (Nov 14): Double rate Cover to Manchester, Great Britain, bearing the enormous 100 soldi franking of 1864 Arms 5 s. rose (pair and three single examples), 10 s. blue (3) and 15 s. brown (3), all perf 9½, tied by GALLATZ despatch cds (Tchilinghirian fig. 743), framed "P.D." as well as "Weit Franko 14" accountancy handstamp, both in red alongside. Reverse with WIEN transit and MANCHESTER arrival (Nov 24) cds's. Some adhesives separated with irregular scissor cuts, one corner bend to the reverse of a 10 soldi stamp, nevertheless a spectacular franking of great visual appeal showing the overland route via Vienna during the winter. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 46, signed Colla; cert. Ferchenbauer (2004). Note: For a double rate letter via Vienna to the United Kingdom a franking of 80 soldi should have been sufficient with twice 15 soldi for the journey to Vienna and twice 25 soldi further to Manchester. In addition, in Vienna the cover was handled only as a single-rate cover with a weiterfranko of only 14 kreuzer to the United Kingdom. What a phantastic and enigmatic item, the 50 soldi rate to England is known on additional covers from the same correspondence. Reference: Shown in Ferchenbauer handbook vol IV (2008) on page 584 as an exceptional example for a multiple three-colour franking. Displayed and discussed in Gmach III on page 388.
