2357 cover imageRomanian Post, Treaty with Austria; 1869 (July 6): Registered Envelope from Galati to Paris, endorsed "voie d'Autriche", bearing a stunning four-colour franking of 1869 Prince Carol ‘without beard’ 5 bani orange on reverse, 10 bani blue (one on front & reverse), 15 bani red (one on front and three on reverse) and 50 bani blue & red on front, tied by light double-circle GALATZ datestamp (Kiriac fig 395). Struck on obverse with "RECOMANDÉE / No / GALATZ" handstamp (Kiriac fig 1596) adjacent to the franking as well as framed “P.D.” and French “A. / P.D.", further by French Chargé handstamp and indistinct French “AUTR. STRASBOURG” entry cds in blue. Reverse with oval "WIEN RECOMMANDIRT" transit and PARIS arrival cds (July 12). A spectacular and correct franking paying on front the single 75 bani rate via Austria to France and on reverse the Romanian registration fee of 25 bani plus the French one of 35 bani. Due to the the French regulation that incoming registered mail had to be closed by five wax seals, the 5 bani adhesive is lightly impaired, however for a franking of that size on such a small cover, the overall adhesive's quality is very good with only three stamps touched. One of the most impressive items of Lithographed postal history with only two covers with a four-colour franking known, well opened up for display. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 144, signed Calves; cert. Heimbüchler (2016) (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

2358 cover imageRomanian Post, Treaty with Austria; 1872 (Oct 11): Envelope from Bucharest to Maubeuge, France, bearing 1872 Prince Carol 50 bani light blue & red emergency issue and 1872 Prince Carol ‘without beard’ 25 brown perforated, tied by bold BUCURESCI datestamp (Kiriac fig 488). The 50 bani adhesive had been used before and shows a part strike of a double-circle BUCURESCI datestamp from its first usage. The framed “P.D.” struck adjacent to the franking was therefore later on overstruck by a two-line "AFFRANCHISSEMT INSUFFISANT" handstamp, the 50 bani crossed out with blue crayon. While the French postal administration applied its "A." handstamp and an "AUTR. AVRICOURT" entry cds in blue, no French taxation can be seen. The reverse with WIEN transit, Paris-Erquelines TPO and MAUBEUGE arrival cds (Oct 18). Both adhesives with tiny nicks, nevertheless the only reported postal fraud with a Lithographed stamps. In addition one of only 12 recorded covers with a franking of the 50 bani emergency stamp known to be used just from end of August to mid-October 1872. All but three show solitary frankings, and only two are mailed to France. A spectacular item for a most advanced collection of classic Romania, used only one day prior to end of the the period of usage of the Lithographed issues, illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 145, signed Roumet; cert. Heimbüchler (2016). Provenance: Heinrich Köhler sale 225 (October 1978), lot 4563 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

2361 cover imageRomanian Post, Treaty with the North German Postal Union; 1869 (Nov 16): Envelope from Bucharest to London, bearing 1869 Prince Carol 10 bani ultramarine and 50 bani blue & red, margins good to large, tied by "BUCURESTI SERA" datestamp (Kiriac fig 442). Obverse struck by framed "P.D." in black and in red as well as "LONDON PAID" arrival (Nov 23) cds in red, "Wf 2¾" (silbergroschen) weiterfranko in blue crayon beyond Prussia. An attractive and interesting cover to this rare destination from Romania, correctly franked with 60 bani postage in this postal convention. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 149, cert. Heimbüchler (2018). Note: On 1st July 1869 a postal treaty between Romanian and the North German Postal Union came into effect. This convention was of special importance for mail to Germany, while mail beyond Germany is pretty rare. Although the letter rate to the United Kingdom was less expensive when sent in the postal convention with the North German Postal Union in comparison to the convention with Austria (60 bani vs. 75 bani), the surviving material demonstrates that this route was barely used with only this cover recorded.
