The sender, writing from the Mission station comments "Grand success of British arms wiped off Makanjura Larafi...". 2335 cover imageRomanian Post, Early Connections with Austria ; 1866 (Aug 8): Cover from Pitesci to Sibiu / Hermannstadt, bearing Prince Carol 1866 20 pa. black on rose, a fine and fresh adhesive with good to large margins in a deep intense colour, tied by two-circle PITESCI cds (Kiriac fig. 347), reverse with Romanian BUCURESCI (Aug 20) cds. Passed to the Austrian post office, struck on front with Austrian BUCAREST (Aug 21) cds and PORTO, reverse with oval HERMANNSTADT datestamp in bluish black (Aug 23). The sender had to pay "15" kreuzer due for an unpaid cover in the regular Levant to Austria rate. One of only four covers recorded showing such a partial pre-payment in this combined Romanian - Austrian postal service. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 118, cert. Heimbüchler (1999). Reference: Displayed and discussed in Heimbüchler - Romania United Principalities 1862-1872 on page 188. 2336 imageRomanian Post, Treaty with Russia; 1869 (Dec 18): Cover front from Galati to Taganrog, bearing 1868 Prince Carol 18 bani carmine-rose, a fine and fresh example with even margins all round, tied by light GALATI datestamp in black (Kiriac fig. 394), framed "P.P." and straight-line ISMAIL handstamps alongside. Cover with Romanian BOLGRAD (Dec 25) and Russian KUBEI (Dec 13) border datestamps and TAGANROG arrival cds's. Manuscript "13k" (kopeks) due for the Russian part of the journey on top. One of just three covers recorded sent under the Romanian / Russian Postal Treaty of November 1867. Illustrated in Edition d'Or volume 72 on page 119. Note: A bilateral agreement between Russia and Romania was signed on November 25, 1867 suspending the operations of the Russian Post Offices in Romania. A Post Office was opened in the border towns of Sculeni and Bolgrad / Kuneni which dealt with correspondence between the two countries. In either case mail had to be prepaid internally and was then charged the internal Postage Due to be paid by the recipient (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
