Also, a plate proof of the 2 centavos in a top marginal imprint block of eight overprinted with the small type and a cover which is a mixed franking of un-overprinted 10c and overprinted 2c. 90345 */cover image1879: Coat of Arms, stationery envelope 2 centavos deep green on dark yellow, additionally franked with 1880, 1 centavo green, six singles and 2 centavos rose, three singles, all overprinted “PLATA PERU”, good colour and perforations mainly fine, tied by cds “LIMA PRINCIPAL 27 AUG 80” sent to Frankfurt, Germany, paying an illegal 12c rate (stationery not recognized). Reverse, an arrival cds “FRANKFURT a MAIN 6 10 80. Top left corner perforations affected by edge. Fine and scarce example. Visually appealing. Comes with an additional envelope dated 1881 with 1c (1) and 5c (2) with second overprint ”PLATA LIMA", sent to Paris with fine strike of the French transit “PANAMA UNION PAQ. F. A. No.1 1 AOUT 81”. Also, unused examples of 1880 1 sol rose with first overprint and 50 centavos green with second type (Scott 41 = $ 750) (Image 1) (Image 2)

90346 cover image1886: Stationery envelope 10 centavos red on white wove, uprated with 1886/95, 1 centavo dull violet two singles, 2 centavos green and 5 centavos orange, fresh colour and fine perforations, tied by cds “CORREOS PERU 16 DEC 91” sent from Lima to Taungs, British Bechuanaland, South Africa, endorsed “Via Panama & Inglaterra”. Reverse, transit cds “LONDON JA 15 92” and “CAPE TOWN CAPE COLONY FE 3 92”. Fine. Scarce.Note: British Bechuanaland was one of 3 destinations in the world not served by the UK's ‘universal’ UPU rates. Mail transiting the UK still required payment of the bilateral treaty rate to the UK. Being such a rare destination, the Peru PO had inadvertently over-charged the sender, there being no credit for the “double transit” fee (Image 1) (Image 2)

90347 cover image1879: Banknote postage due, 5 cents brown strip of three and single, fresh colour, perforations fine, tied by pink hollow ring alongside arrival cds “BROOKLYN N.Y. APR 3 82” to the reverse of an envelope, endorsed “Ship Letter”, faint cachet “U.S.S. ALASKA” and opera glass “NEW YORK APR 3 DUE 20 CENTS”. Minor soiling. Eye-catching postage due use. Fine. Comes with an additional cover from the same correspondence, with a single 5 cents postage due to front and clearer ship cachet, sent March 17 1882. Some faults. Note: The USS Alaska was part of the American squadron observing the Chilean and Peruvian War. Mail carried outside the UPU mails by supply ship to New York where it was treated as “Ship Letter” and charged 5c, which was half the UPU charge (Image 1) (Image 2)

90347A cover imagePeru - Chilean Occupation 1881-82: Arms of Peru 10 centavos green with red “PERU / CHILEAN OCCUPATION” overprint, strong colour, perforations mainly fine, used on mourning cover from Lima to Arequipa, dated 24 May 1882, neatly tied by LIMA cds in black with an additional strike alongside. On arrival in Arequipa, outside the zone of Chilean control, the occupation issue was declared invalid by Peruvian authorities where a striking blue handstamp “DEFICIT 10 CENTAVOS” was applied, along with the personal circular seal of the postal officer to authenticate the surcharge. A rare and desirable postal history item of the War of the Pacific period, clearly illustrating the clash between Chilean occupation authorities and the legitimate Peruvian postal service. Covers showing both use of Chilean occupation stamps and their subsequent rejection by Peruvian officials are scarce and highly sought after. Exhibit item which combines usage of Scott N16 on cover, taxation marking, and official’s cachet. Cert. Moorhouse (2001) (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
