1903 cover imageAlgeria Military Pigeon Mail 1906: Pigeon Mail experimental message, on flimsy paper, sent 27 April 1906, from Ghardaia to Djelfa, via Laghouat, a distance of 300 km., using four pigeons. The message is struck with a three line cachet 'DIRECTION / DES / AFFAIRS INDIGENES' and alongside a partial circular Ghardaia Unit Commander handstamp, both in blue. Handwritten notes to message indicating the timing of the pigeons departing in the morning and then seen over Laghouat, before arriving at Djelfa at noon. Rare. Cert. Sorani (1988). Ex. 2437 cover image1803 (March.10): Early entire letter from Andorra written by Josep Fornells addressed to Francisco Satorras in Calaf (Province of Barçelona). Text written in Catalan with interesting content: "After greeting your representative, I carried out the task you entrusted me with, which was to collect the payment letters, and he replied that the remaining amount was 884 reales and 20 diners, which he would not deliver to me, but rather collect in Puigcerdà." Fine and very early example of the merchant's postal service carried in bags by TRAGINERS and their mules or horses, to compete with the official mail for the lowest price. 90099 cover image1886: Stationery postal card 1½ pence brown on buff, used with upright barred oval “A02” with cds alongside “ANTIGUA JA 11 84” sent to St Kitts, arrival cds “ST KITTS JA 12 84”. Mild discoloration as is expected. Fine and scarce. Mail between all the islands in the Caribbean is not common. Comes with an additional card of the same rate value sent from Nevis in 1883 to Leytonstone, England with fine “A09”, cds and arrival to front (H&G 1). Also, an unused Trinidad 1884, 2 pence + 2 pence blue overprinted SPECIMEN. Additionally, two unused Bahamas 4 pence violet stationery envelopes, one with the reduction in rate 2½ d in red. Fine selection (5). (H&G 3)Note: As the distance between the islands was 56 nautical miles, the card at 1½ pence is overpaid. The UPU permitted rate for the distance was 1 penny. However, Antigua did not have a 1 penny card for the Base rate. The sender having to pay the Maritime rate. Antigua issued a 1d card in 1886. A fine collection covering many aspects of this difficult airmail period.
