'7' skilling debit in red crayon to the United Kingdom on front. Tear in top of second stamp from left, perforation irregularities due to the stamp's position nearby the edge of the cover, two horizontal filing folds away from the franking, nevertheless an appealing presentation of the 38 skilling single rate via Germany to the United Kingdom. Note: An all year regular steamer route was established from 7 December 1858 by the Nordre Bergenhus Dampskipsekskab (Nordre Bergenhus steamer company). Two ships the DS Framnæs and the D/S Fjalir served this route with the D/S Framnæs built by Alexander Denny, Dumbarton in Scotland arriving in Bergen on 27 November 1858. D/S Framnæs was broken up in 1951 serving for 93 years, it was then the Norwegian steamship with the longest service. 2176 cover imageSteamers of the Fjord - D/S Framnæs; 1862 (Jan 15): Quintuple rate Entire letter written on board of the steamer D/S Framnæs and directed to Sogndal, bearing a strip of five 1856/57 Oscar 4 sk. blue, a pristine multiple with fresh colour and excellent perforation, each adhesive cancelled but not tied by pen strokes in the characteristic way done on this vessel, endorsements "Framnæs 15/1 62", "betalt" (paid) and "magtpaaliggende" (important) on the front of this exceptional item. A light filing crease through the right stamp of the multiple does not affect the impressive appearance of this unique piece, the only multiple weight letter with manuscript cancellation, making the Framnæs letter a major exhibition item of Norwegian Shipmail and Postal History in general. Note: This item comes from the correspondence to Procurator Fleischer in Sogndal, presumably Carl Johan Fleischer (1816-1897) who was also mayor of Sogndal between 1854 and 1864. The entire contained in addition some important signed documents which explains its high weight. One of two letters recorded with this early FJALIR datestamp, an immaculate strike mostly found in much worse quality on detached Oscar adhesives. Note: The D/S FJALIR was the sister ship of the D/S Framnæs and built by Alexander Denny, Dumbarton arriving in Bergen on December 30, 1858. Between 1859 and 1867 it served in the Sognefjord, before it was transfered on the Bergen-Nordfjord route while the company's other local liner DS Hornelen took over the route on Sognefjord.
