27 cover image1892/1914: Extensive collection of postal stationery contained within a large binder and an album. Predominately registered stationery envelopes from Lagos, Oil Rivers, Niger Coast Protectorate and Southern Nigeria. Comprises over one-hundred examples, unused and used, mainly mounted on exhibition pages with detailed categorisation, printing and usages. Includes 'Specimen' examples from the U.P.U. archives in Berne, several of which have file numbers in pencil. Also noted variety 'Bulging Value Tablet' and 'Short E' and rare unused Niger Coast Protectorate 1897 2 d. Ultramarine size K (H&G C5b). Additionally there are four Posts & Telegraphs used forms. Some faults although many very fine. 28 cover imageAccumulation of thirty-three Niger Coast Protectorate registered stationery envelopes. Comprising twenty-three (23) unused, of which three are Specimen examples and twenty (20) used covers, the latter which are predominately franked with 1894 Niger Coast Protectorate issues, with the odd cover in combination with the 1892 British Protectorate Oil Rivers. Includes envelope sizes F, G and H2 and much is presented upon album pages with detailed descriptions. Noted an attractive 1894 2 d. registered envelope uprated with 1892 5 d., 1894 (Jan.) 1 d. and 1894 (May) ½ d. and 1 d. Also, a late use of the 'size F' first printing franked with 1892 ½ d. and 2 d. (SG 1&3) sent from Brass River to Manchester on 3 December 1895. Mixed in places although some fine and a few have better cancels. 29 cover imageNigeria – Oil Rivers & Niger Coast Protectorate to Independence 1892–1961: A remarkable and wide-ranging collection of 24 postal stationery and associated material, including many rare Specimen strikes, early usages, and unique survivors. Highlights include: Oil Rivers 1892 registration envelopes (sizes F & H2) with Samuel & Huggins type 13 Specimen handstamps (both unique recorded examples); Niger Coast Protectorate cards and envelopes with scarce frankings and combinations, notably the 1895 Old Calabar cover bearing the provisional surcharge; rare reply cards including the 1907 Lagos 1 d.+1 d. (one of three recorded used, with Specimen and unused examples); Nigeria registered stationery showing scarce Akassa and Zungeru usages; 1914 KGV postal cards including a used example to USA (one of 15 recorded) and complete unused Specimen set (H&G 1–3); 1927 Lagos registered envelope to Berlin with additional adhesives; a scarce 1929 2 s. blue Postal Order used at Jebu Ode (one of five recorded for Nigeria); 1932 Mamfe International 2½ d.Reply Coupon with “British Mandate” cancel together with unused example; and a 1961 Benin Mask 6 d. aerogramme final plate proof with issued example. 30 cover imageGroup of fourteen postal stationery post cards, plus one cover and two small pieces presented upon 12 album pages. Comprising one unused and eleven used Niger Coast Protectorate 1895 1 d. vermilion cards, organised as a postmark study, including cancels from; Brass River (3), Bonny River (2), Buguma (1), Forcados (1), Old Calabar River (2), Sombreiro River (1) and Warri (1); sent to Gemany, France, England (including one to Isle of Wight) and Congo. Also, two used British 1 d. cards, one a reply part sent from Forcados River back to the UK (used as intended) and the other sent from London to Gambia redirected to Lagos and returned unclaimed with a variety of instructionals and postmarks. Also, an 1899 cover franked with a GB 1 d. lilac sent from Burutu to Sonning, Berkshire cancelled by "THE ROYAL NIGER COMPANY" rectangular handstamp in purple (SG Z44). Lastly, an example of the Niger Company Territories 'Lokoja' oval handstamp (SG Z72) and 'Akassa' cancel (SG Z20) on piece. 31 cover image1907/30: Collection contained within one large album, comprising eighty KGV postal stationery envelopes and registered stationery. Almost entirely used, with a few unused and a small number of 'Specimen' examples. Good range of frankings, postmarks and usages. Variety of registered. Origins include; Aba, Brass, Degema, Ebute Metta, Ibadan, Ikot-Ekpene, Logas, Opobo, Onitsha,Oyo, Zaria and others. Mostly destination mail to Europe and America. Although noted 1932 1½ d. envelope uprated with additional 1 d. and ½ d. sent to Kobe, Japan. 32 cover image1938/50: Group of seventeen 3 d. blue registered stationery envelopes, size H2, comprising 6 unused of which half have the first imprint "THOMAS DE LA RUE & COMPANY, LIMITED" (H&G C4a) and the others the abbreviated "THOS. DE LA RUE & CO. LTD" (H&G C5b). Similarly, of the 11 used there are 3 examples of the unabbreviated imprint and eight of the abbrieviated version. Varied selection of origins and destinations for those circulated including a C4a used internally between Ijebu Ode to Onitsha (12 July 1951). Condition is mainly fine, the unused especially fresh and clean. A scarce selection (17). 35 imagePostal Orders: 1925-1980 Collection of British Postal Orders overprinted or used in Nigeria, comprising thirty-four examples, many of which are the only recorded example, or one of just a few for the value and issue (according to Gledhill there are 52 surviving examples from Nigeria). Included amongst others is; King George V 6 d. blue with stamp box at left and 2 d. overprinted type T3T with 6 bars on 1 d. poundage dated 7 March 1938 (Damaturu). Also, King George VI 7 s. blue with 3 d. overprint T4TA on 2 d. poundage which is the only recorded example. Interestingly a QEII British £1 vermilion issued in Lagos 28 July 1980 which has violet handstamp on reverse 'PAYMENT AUTHORISED / 6 NOV 1981 / Head Postmaster' and is accompanied with a letter authorising payment. This is the only know example. Condition is slightly mixed for some of the early examples as is expected, however fine considering. Rare and unique offering. 36 imagePostal Orders: 1948-1956 Group of five King George VI British Postal Orders overprinted for use in Nigeria. Includes 1 s. 6 d. blue with overprint type T3T 2d. over 1½ d. poundage issued at Yaba 2 March 1946 with 3 d. stamp affixed increasing the value to 1 s. 9 d. (only recorded example).; 5 s. blue overprint type T3T 3 d. original poundage 1½ d. issued at IMO ABEOKUTA 2 March 1948. Also 4 s. with 2½ d. over 2 d. issued at Ezinifite 2 October 1958 and 5 s. with 2½ d. over 2 d. with additional 6 d. stamp increasing value to 5 s. 6 d., issued at Lagos 18 May 1956. Lastly, 15 s. red overprinted 4 d. on 3 d. with additional stamps of 2 d. & 4 d. (total 15 s. 6 d.) issued at Onitsha 16 May 1956 with punch holes. Some minor faults as is expected, otherwise a fine and rare selection. According to Gledhill there are only 52 surviving British postal orders used in Nigeria (5). 37 bof/(*) imageInternational Reply Coupon 1927: Imperial type, Proof, imperforate bottom left corner marginal block of four, printed on block cypher watermarked paper, with "WATERLOW & SONS LIMITED LONDON" imprint, without printing to reverse, from the original sheet of nine. Has two vertical creases, one heavy through the left side pair which has caused several pin holes, also the bottom left impression has a hole above the ship mask and a surface rub in top border. 5547 cover image1888: Stampless cover to Manchester from an Officer serving on "S.S. Cameroon", struck on arrival in Liverpool with fine strike of large "6d." due marking in black (Officer's rate) with Manchester cds (March 24) alongside. Reverse with circular "LIVERPOOL / B.R. PACKET" in black (March 24). Scarce. Note: The S.S. Cameroon was delivered in June 1874 by John Elder and Company for the British and African Steam Navigation Company. 5550 cover image1899: Stampless cover to Reading endorsed "No Stamps Available, Jebba 3.7.99 / Capt. Eckington 1st W.A.F.F." (West African Field Force), struck on despatch with two strikes of oval framed "LOKOJA / POST OFFICE" datestamps (Type 8) in violet (dated 10th and 14th July). Blue crayon "T / 2" with this deleted on arrival in Reading (Aug 13) with correct "1d. / 620" charge above. Reverse with framed "THE ROYAL NIGER COAST COMPANY / CHARTERED & LIMITED / 21 JUL 1899 / POST OFFICE / BURUTU" in violet (Type 6) of transit and unusually landed at Cardiff (Aug 12). Minor opening closed tears at top but very scarce (Image 1) (Image 2)
