1401 cover image1930 (April 24): First Flight Cover on FAM 5, signed by Charles Lindbergh. Airmail envelope franked with Nicaragua 1914/23 issue adhesives (faults top and tone spots), tied by rectangular barred cancels with violet circular Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, 24 ABR 1930 handstamp, addressed to Cristóbal, Canal Zone. Carried on the Pan American Airways FAM 5 Miami–Cristóbal service, on the southbound flight via Nicaragua, arriving Cristóbal 27 April 1930 (backstamp). The cover bears the bold autograph of Charles A. Lindbergh at right to front, who piloted the flight, and is countersigned verso by Herald Blix. Ex-collection Otto Kalli, a noted airmail and pioneer flight collector. Cover is soilied. An outstanding and rare Nicaragua flight cover from the inaugural Central American extension of FAM 5, enhanced by the Lindbergh signature. Signed by A. Bolaffi. 21 cover imageAccumulation of thirty British Protectorate Oil Rivers registered stationery envelopes. Comprising eighteen used examples, predominately franked with 1892 Great Britain Jubilee overprinted “BRITISH / PROTECTORATE / OIL RIVERS” or the 1894 Niger Coast Protectorate issue. A few in combination. Includes envelope sizes F, G and H2 and in the main written-up upon album pages outlining the specification, printings and rates. A few are loose. Includes unused and used examples of scarcer stationery which had a limited printing. Most are addressed to towns/cities in England (such as; Sheffield, Manchester, Cambridge, Liverpool), or sent locally. Various rates and postmarks. Noted a septuple weight cover (size G) franked with a tri-colour combination of 1892 ½ d., horizontal pair 2½ d. and a 1 s., which also has to the reverse an official wax seal “OLD CALABAR RIVER” over a Crown. Condition is mixed in places although a number are fine. 22 cover imageNiger Coast Protectorate 1894 (May): 2½ d. blue used on a 1897 2 d. ultramarine postal stationery registered envelope, size K (H&G 5b), sent from Old Calabar to Gand, Belgium, dated 8 June 1901, tied by an oval "Registered / Old Calabar" datestamp in black, with a 'Registered / London' hooded circle in violet dated 5 July 1901. To the back an arrival cds 'Gand' dated 5 July. Light central vertical fold, some apparent disturbance from use, otherwise fine. A rare cover: the only recorded non-cto used example. Note: With the exception of the size G envelopes, these registered envelopes, with the redesigned imprint, are difficult to find in any condition. The size K took the author of 'The Postal Stationery of Nigeria' 30 years of collecting before he managed to acquire the size K in mint or genuinely used condition.
