8305 cover imageNeuseeland: 1871/1873: Chalon 2 d. orange, gez. 12½, zwei waagr. Sept). Vorders. roter Transitstp. Provenienz: Sammlung H. Dumas; Sammlung Sylvain Wyler, 165. Corinphila-Auktion, Zürich November 2010, Los 2671. New Zealand: 1871/73: Chalon Head 2 d. orange, perf. 12½, two horizontal pairs used on 1873 'Goldrush' cover from the Goldfields at Waimea via Suez to Gordevio, Valle Maggia, Switzerland, cancelled by four neat strikes of distinctive "W" handstamps of Westland in black with Hokitika (June 30), Christchurch (July 2) and Locarno (Sept. 11) transit cds. on reverse. Obverse with "LONDON / H / PAID A/ 9 SP. 73" cds. and "PD" in circle, both in red. Prepaid 8 d. with manuscript "2d" British credit in red ink and further "20" Centimes to France. The cover is somewhat aged and the stamps, with some faults to perfs., have been lifted for checking and carefully replaced. Nevertheless a scarce and interesting 'Goldrush' cover to Switzerland. Gi.: 133. Note: Gold was first discovered in Waimea Creek in November 1864 and by the following year thousands of men were digging up the creek and it's tributaries. They then moved to mining gold from gravels along the flats bordering the stream. By 1870 the nearby town of Stafford had 37 hotels and several shops, with a population exceeding 5000. By 1875 the alluvial diggings had been largely worked out. Provenance: Collection H. Dumas, Collection Sylvain Wyler, Corinphila sale 165, November 2010, lot 2671 (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
