5532 cover image1874 /99: 1 d. dull rose, six examples used on 1883 cover addressed to General H. Hope Crealock in London, all tied by "LOWER TUGELA / NATAL" circular datestamps (Aug 31) in black. Reverse with Stanger and Durban transit datestamps (Aug 31) and London arrival. Reverse of cover also shows "John Dunn" in manuscript - John Robert Dunn (1834 -1895) was a South African hunter and diplomat of British descent. Born in Port Alfred in 1834, he spent his childhood in Natal, orphaned as a teenager he lived in native dress on land near the Tugela River. He was a friend and confidante of the Zulu chief Cetshwayo. Dunn's 'Wikipedia' entry is entertaining and extraordinary - he fathered no less than 117 children! Note: General Henry Hope Crealock (1831-1891) had a glittering Military career from the Crimean War onwards. He commanded the 1st Division of the Army in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 (Image 1) (Image 2)

2130 image1852: 15 c. orange-yellow, a used example cancelled during the 1864 Postmark Trials with circular handstamp in repeated "Zig-Zag" format designed in black. Exquisite and of great rarity; believed the only example in private hands. Cert. Vleeming (2025). Note: This trial cancellation was designed by Victor Joseph an Hinsbergh in the course of the 1864 Cancellation Trials, which aimed to find a design suitable for the cancellation of coloured paper. This design was later rejected. Only one further example of this trial cancellation was known to exist in the National Postal Museum in the Hague, though Henk Vleeming states this to have since "disappeared" during when the collection was moved to the Museum of Communication and later the national archives (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
