5514 cover image1839 (Feb 23): Two entire letters mailed from Rome to the Earl of Carnarvon on the same day (Feb 23) with ROMA cds's; one with framed "27 Feb, 3. d" Postage Due handstamp in black; the other entire sent care of Bell Brothers by French ship, with same "27 Feb, 3. d" Malta due mark in black, but forwarded on to Athens with notation "Messrs. Bell to be requested to have the goodness to deliver this immediately" and sent on to the Poste Restante in Athens. A most unusual pair (Image 1)

5517 cover image1839 (Oct 15): Entire letter from Malta to Lucca, Tuscany, written from the Lazaretto in the Harbour of Marsamxett and disinfected with slits, endorsed "per vapore Francesi" struck with fine "Malta Post Office" straight line in black (MPO 1a), mailed via Livorno with straight LIVORNO in black, multitude of rate markings in ink ("7" and French "14") and in red crayon and Lucca arrival. 5518 cover image1839 (Oct 21): Prepaid entire letter addressed from Penryn to the "Earl of Carnavon, Quarantine, Malta", struck with London Tombstone 'Paid' in red (Oct 23) with "1/8d." charge in red manuscript. However upon arrival the Earl had left for London and the letter returned back with manuscript "Forwarded by L. Barbar" and struck with straight line "Malta Post Office" in black. Framed red "Paquebots / de la / Mediterranée" in red and on arrival (Nov 28) with "BRITISH "10" / FOREIGN "1 s. 10½", handstamp in black. 90179 cover image1869: Line-Engraved 2 pence blue, plate 14, horizontal pair, good colour and perforations mostly fine, tied by duplex “A25 MALTA 9 JU 76”, to a mourning envelope, sent to Yokohama, Japan. Reverse, with transit cds “HONG KONG - MARINE SORTER / SINGAPORE-TO HONG-KONG JY 15 17 76”. Envelope reduced slightly at top, flap missing and small opening tear behind first stamp reinforced at back and second adhesive perforations trimmed top right. A fine and rare example of the “four pence” rate from Malta to Japan, used within the last month this rate was valid. One of five examples known. Note: The new GPU “India & Far East” rate of 8 pence began on 1 July 1876. Remark: The addressee Basil Hall Chamberlain (1850-1935) at this date was teaching at the Imperial Naval Academy in Tokyo, he was later a Professor at the Tokyo Imperial University, writing some of the earliest translations of haiku into English (Image 1) (Image 2)

1934 cover imageLATI - Eastbound Mail to occupied France 1940/41: Lot Three censored airmail envelopes from Martinique to France, all with endorsed 'via Natal' and franked with 19 francs from "Fort de France Martinique" into the occupied zone in France, with one bearing boxed 'NE PEUT ETRE ACHEMINE / ZONE OCCUPEE' in red and black handstamp 'RETOUR A L'ENVOYEUR', the two 1941 covers censored in Martinique by the Vichy regime (censor 3), then in Trinidad by the British and lastly in Turin by the Italian Authorities, the third cover franked at reduced military franchise rate with 18 francs to Tarn et Garonne, redirected to Frejus (Var).
