2023 cover image1878-1900: Queen consort of Italy Margherita of Savoy, signed autograph letter, 4 pages, addressed to an unidentified commander, elegantly penned on cream stationery, the Queen expresses her heartfelt gratitude for the books he had sent her, remarking on the pleasure and diversion they provided during her time of seclusion: 'La ringrazio infinitamente, Signor Commendatore, dei libri che S. mi ha mandato. Sono distrattivi, aprirli mi ha fatto molto piacere.' The letter closes with a revealing and intimate passage, in which she conveys her hope that they might meet in the Library the following month, should she be able to leave her present confinement. This correspondence offers a rare glimpse into the private world of Queen Margherita, whose refined education, literary sensibilities, and role as a patroness of the arts made her one of the most admired European royal figures of her age. An elegant and historically significant autograph letter from Italy’s first Queen consort, combining literary appreciation with personal candor. Dimensions: 19.5 x 12.5 cm, Gilded frame: 26 x 31 cm. Provenance: Collection of Pope Pius XII, Vatican, Italy & Ars Sacra, GM 2025 (Image 1) (Image 2)

They started from Floyd Bennett Field only on May 15th, few months delayed because of bad weather. They were forced down at Leact Ui Concubair, Ireland, due to engine trouble. After repairs they reached Rome on June 11th. On their way back, they took off from Littorio Airport, Rome in the morning bound for Dublin, beginning the return flight to New York and Terra Nova. Having encountered adverse weather with fog, rain and wind during the crossing of the Irish Sea, the pilots decided to reverse course and return to Wales. While looking for a suitable landing site, at 03.15 on the morning of 19 August, the plane struck the Carne Ingli mountain, two miles from the Pembrokeshire coast. The monoplane overturned and was destroyed while the pilots were fortunately unhurt. The mail was recovered and delivered at the closest post office.
