The couriers had to travel over 40 km. to deliver the letter. Filing crease lower half, otherwise very fine and extremely rare. Ex. 1988 cover image1524: Entire letter sent from the Chancellor of Bergamo to the Council of the Republic of Venice, dated 30 December 1524 (2pm), sent express delivery with instruction "cito, cito, citissime, volandissime" (fast, fast, swiftly, fly) and two triangles symbolising two stirrups which indicated two horses will be needed. Sealed with Lion of Saint Mark. To the reverse are departure times of the couriers-rider's leaving. The letter suggests an officer to meet with the Milanese Cardinal Ambrogio Trivulzio. The letter arrived in Venice, a distance of 220 km., on 1 January. Trivial toning, fine and rare. Ex. 1990 cover image1737/96: Group 31 covers / entires after the War of Spanish Succession and Lombardo-Veneto under Austrian rule, all directed to Coira / Chur, in Grison / Graubünden, Switzerland originating from Arona, Bergamo, Intra, Milano, Pavia, and Venezia; six covers from Torino in Sardinia and five covers from Pietralungo or Perugia in the Papal States, also all directed to Chur; the lot includes an 1637 entire from Macerata to Magliano sent by Felice Centini (1562-1641), bishop of Macerata & Tolentino, the letter signed 'Cardinale d'Ascoli', with his paper seal on reverse.
