5475 cover imageSpecial Air Flight 'Kohat - Quetta' by the Viceroy 1932 (April 22): Cover endorsed typewritten 'By H.E. the Viceroy's / Avro 10. / KOHAT - QUETTA' at upper left, flown with Viceroy Lord Willingdon, signed by R.A.F. pilot D.J. Anderson; with QUETTA 23 APR.32 arrival backstamp on reverse. The British Viceroy Lord Willingdon travelled via this special flight to install the first Governor of the North West Frontier Province Sir F. Griffiths. Stamps have been pre-cancelled “F.M. & Co.” in purple before posting to prevent theft on route to the post office. Reverse, railway cds “GLASGOW SORTING TENDER AP 14 84”. Fine high-rate cover, unusually franked with the 1 rupee. Note: Multiple letter rate covers over three rates in UPU mail are rare since single rate letters comprised 96% of letter mail and double rate letters were about 3.5% (Image 1) (Image 2)

90170 cover image1879: Stationery postal card 1½ anna blue posted by solider at Port Said in Egypt, dated 22 September 1885, sent to Kirkwall, Orkney Isles, Scotland, struck with a black cds “SUEZ DEPART”, the franking not recognised, a boxed “0” (denoting invalidity of the impressed stamp or zero value), and “T”. On arrival in Britain, a red cds “LONDON JY 6 85”, and manuscript "1d" in black applied, treated at military concessionary rate, charged double the domestic postal rate. Hooded "CEFALONIA" datestamp of despatch in watery blue ink (July 16) and small circular "CORFU" arrival cds in blue on reverse (July 17); the stamps being placed as per regulations: 1 d. inter-island fee on the obverse and ½ d.
