Indian Mutiny 1857 (March 19): Extract from the Ordnance Dept., "Proceedings of the Military Board", printed form with recommendation by one Major Young of the 43rd. Regiment of the Native Infantry, stating "The Board have no
doubt that Breach Loading will very shortly supercede Muzzle Loading Pieces" - this tragic rather throwaway comment leading to the disaster of 10 May 1857 whereby Seepoys in Meerut refused to use the cartridges on Breech Loading Rifles as they
required pig or cow fat to grease the bullet. An extraordinarily bland document that led to one and half years of bloodshed and turmoil. Rare, important and most unusual (Image 1)
