1857 (Dec 16): "Overland Friend of China" complete Newspaper, No. 23, conveyed to England as an enclosure and mailed with 1854/57 Great Britain 1 d. red star tied by "285" obliterator of Exeter to Teignmouth. Rare and fine
complete Newspaper with much information on the 2nd Opium War "From the 12th of the current month, the River and Port of Canton and their outlets will be held in a state of effective Blockade"; and market quotations for Opium and local correspondence
intending to debunk the British Government's (true) view that over 100'000 Chinese died each year from Opium addiction; the final page with a vast list of Ships involved in both Trade with China and a long list of British and foreign Naval blockade
vessels. A fascinating document and an unusual usage (Image 1)

cds code C datestamp (June 13) in black. Reverse with imprinted "HMS Powerful" on flap in black; SHANGHAI dollar chop in black, Hong Kong cds and London (July 18) arrival. A fine and most attractiive cover. Note: HMS Powerful was built expressly for
work on the China Station. During a full-power run between Wei Hai Wai, China, and Yokohama, Japan, in late July 1898, her stokers mutinied, but she then visited Port Arthur without incident. Her guns and crew later assisted at the Siege of Ladysmith

Reverse, transit cds “HONG KONG FE 22 72”, and arrival “BOMBAY 13 MA 72”. Seal on flap removed and some closed tears at top. Fine example of the 8 cent rate. Additionally, comes with cover sent to Boston, USA franked with two 8 cents singles, sent
