90291 cover image1879: Stampless return parcel envelope from the Guatemala parcel administration, sent to New York, USA, struck with red cds “CORREOS DE GUATEMALA PAQUETES 28 MAR”, with ornate printed stationery emblem “ADMON GRAL de CORREOS GUATEMALA”, with arrival postage due cds in black “NEW YORK DUE 20 CTS APR 6”. Interestingly, addressed to “Mr J. W. Scott, 146 Fulton St., New York”, which is ‘the’ John Walter Scott, of Scott catalogue fame. The address is where Scott moved his stamp and coin shop in 1877. The envelope would have been pasted onto a larger envelope that accompanied an undelivered parcel, the Guatemala parcel authorities returning it to the sender. Envelope is slightly reduced to right, with dried glue to reverse. Fine condition for the type of usage and journey. Note: John Walter Scott is described as the “Father of American Philately”. Scott is believed to have moved into the Fulton Street address in 1877 and remained there until May 1882, when he relocated to Broadway (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
