90166 cover image1880: Stationery post card 1 cent green, used with perfectly upright Chinese Treaty Port “SHANGHAE SP 7 82” cds in black, to Hong Kong. Reverse, with arrival cds “HONG KONG SP 12 82” in black and to the top left corner a small square Chinese seal mark in blue ink. Extraordinary domestic rate of 1 cent, for a distance of 955 nautical miles, which was a 4 day trip by boat at 10 knots. Rare example. 5238 cover image1840: 1 d. black Mulready letter-sheet, a used example from Sheffield addressed to Edward Balfour at the Royal College of Surgeons, London cancelled by red Maltese Cross; Sheffield despatch cds's (Nov 22, 1840) in red and London arrival (Nov 23) in red. The Mulready with contemporary endorsements above and below Britannia "N.E.W.S." (North, East, West, South...), at sides ("Bad News / Good News") at lower left "poor Wm. Mulready A dear £1600's worth / Irish job", and upon reverse "This Post Office cover will become invaluable on account of its absurdity, some few hundred years hence, if well preserved: almost equal to a Queen Anne's farthing, although in 1840 it only did cost one Penny / Sic Transit Donna Maria Gloria". Illustrated in "The Mulready Caricature" by Robin Cassell and Richards Hobbs, Volume 1, page 29. An extraordinary and rare usage indicating quite clearly what contemporaries thought of Sir William Mulready's design (Image 1)

Creased and with soiling and slight imperfections but an extraordinary usage four days prior to the anticipated first day of issue: these features are wholly consistent with other known "early date" usages. Mulready envelopes, stereo A139, both with similar comic designs by the same artist. Illustrated in "The Mulready Caricature" by Robin Cassell and Richards Hobbs, Volume 1, page 25.
