646 cover image1840: 1 d. black, plate 5, lettered EH and EC, each tied to a cover by Maltese Cross of Wotten-Under-Edge, one cover showing the "special" scored Maltese Cross in black, the other the "normal" cross struck in red, each with corresponding Wotton-Under-Edge double-arc c.d.s. despatch backstamps (26 May and 9 July, 1841), each sent to Carnalway, Kilcullen, Ireland, adhesives with faults, covers with some soiling and filing folds, opened for display, yet a rare duo, illustrating both cancellation types, and the only two recorded covers with this distinctive Maltese Cross posted to Ireland Gi. 651 cover image1840: 1 d. black, Plate 6, lettered RI, a used example with large margins all round and portions of adjoining stamps at left and at top, tied to 1840 cover from Newton Stewart to Edinburgh by Maltese Cross struck in "magenta / dull reddish purple" ink. Reverse with framed "Newton Stewart" despatch handstamp (Dec 16) in the same ink as the Cross and Edinburgh arrival in orange-red. This cover mentioned in Alcock & Holland on page 31 and listed in Rockoff & Jackson on page 442. Seal missing on reverse and two file folds well away from the adhesive but of great rarity. Cert.
