90088 cover image1843/90: Group of five covers and three cards. Comprising two stampless examples, one bearing scarce “PAID IN AMERICA LIVERPOOL” tombstone, the other the rare “♚ / PAID AT QUEBEC L.C.”. Three envelopes franked with surface printed issues, including an 1884 5d dull green on cover addressed to a soldier in Singapore; a Jubilee 6d on 1890 cover to Cape Colony paying accelerated transit and a registered stationery 2½d uprated with two 1d venetian sent to Germany. Two unused stationery post cards one with the original wrapper band and also a 1d post card to Belgium together with the reply card sent back to London. The odd imperfection. 90184 cover image1878: Postal stationery envelope 50 cents, in combination with Great Britain 1864, 1 penny red, plate 201, both of good colour, the former used with a light strike of a duplex “MAURITIUS 78” (date unclear), the latter by a duplex “575 NORWICH MR 3 78”, sent to Norwich and redirected to Bury St Edmonds, England, with arrival cds “NORWICH 3 MR 78” and "BURY ST EDMONDS MR 4 78". Creasing. Soiled and part of flap missing with two opening tears top and the lower left corner is missing and has been repaired. Rare use of this stationery envelope, with just 960 printed and a handful known used from this period. Comes with an envelope franked with 1881, 1 penny lilac and 2½ pence blue with Late Fee sent to Rotterdam, Holland, overweight and charged 15 c. with Netherlands postage due 12½ c. and 2 c. applied. 609 cover image1840 (May 7): 1d. black, plate 1A, lettered EB, an early impression without plate wear, tied by red Maltese Cross to 1840 entire letter with 'T.P./ Moorgate St.' receiving house handstamp alongside, showing London 'MY 7 1840" evening duty handstamp on reverse (2nd. day of issue) addressed to "Mrs. Taylor, Gaydon Street, Barnstaple, Devon". Highly interesting content relating to the world's First postage stamp: " London 7th. May 1840, Dear Madam, to show you the new system of postage, I send you a line with one of the new stamps which avoids the trouble of paying. The stamps I understand are at present only available in London, but I hear that you will have them very shortly in the country........(signed) Henry Spring." A wonderful and historic document in regard to the issue of the Penny Black the day before (6 May 1840). Illustrated and described in detail in 'May Dates' (1999) by Mike Jackson FRPSL, page 62 & 63.
