Cover endorsed "Post Office till called for" and it must be presumed the addressee did not appear as struck with circular "UNCLAIMED" and "ADVERTISED" in black and framed "UNCLAIMED" in red. Reverse with "Dead Letter Office" datestamp (Aug 29). The enclosures (6) are still with the cover comprising a letter from the Third Assistant Postmaster General's letter from Washington DC confirming that a registered letter had been delivered to C.E. Carson in New York on 2 Feb 1872 and four letters regarding the sale of parcels held at Victoria Docks in London (since 1864) as fees had not been paid, and the letter from James Carson to his brother in Texas.
