1842/69: Entire letters/covers (3) to the Cape of Good Hope all addressed to Captain George Broke RN of HMS Thunderbolt, on anti-slavery Patrol in West Africa, with the first cover an illustrated envelope with an engraving of
Burghley House, Northamptonshire franked by 1841 2 d. blue tied by black Maltese Cross with three line "RETURNED / For / POSTAGE" and manuscript "1/4d." prepaid to Cape of Good Hope with Wansford cds on reverse in red - faults but of great rarity;
1844 cover prepaid "8d." from Birmingham with "SHIP LETTER / ♚ / LONDON" in red (June 27) to the Cape, 1845 very similar cover but with VENTNOR undated circle prepaid "8d." with "SHIP LETTER / ♚ / LONDON" in red (Sept 24) and on arrival struck with
framed "TO PAY" in black. A splendid group - the illustrated cover being extraordinary but with faults at top. Note: On 2nd Jan 1844, HMS Thunderbolt captured three vessels trying to take enslaved people from Angola. One of the vessels was carrying
1'200 people in a space so narrow that they could not even sit up and had to crawl on their bellies. On Jan 28, 1844 HMS Thunderbolt arrived at Cape Town with one of the slavers that she had captured. This was the "Josephine" with 457 enslaved people
on board. "Thunderbolt" was wrecked in Algoa Bay in 1845 (Image 1)

ornament commemorative of the service thus rendered by her to the sick and wounded ....engaged in the late war in the East..." with the cover showing manuscript "About the Sultan's present". Sold together with a further 'thank you' letter to Miss
Emily Anderson written in 1859 from a Sergeant late of the Scots Fusilier Guards stating "present in the shape of a couple of chickens of my own rearing and sincerely hope you will do me the favour of accepting same as a token of my gratitude for the
