5214 cover image1806 (June 20): Entire letter from Taunton to St. Vincent endorsed "p. Packet from Falmouth", struck on reverse with "TAUNTON / 161" mileage mark in black, rated "9" to pay and altered to "1/10d." due upon arrival in manuscript. A fine and interesting letter: "You'll see by the public print how the Slave Trade has been again up, it is thought Mr. Fox's bill will pass in the House of Commons, but the upper house may refuse it, as they did previously. It may cause a demand for negroes in our islands...". Note: Whilst Charles James Fox's bill was not a complete abolition of slavery, the positive vote was a significant step, with the bill passing to ban British ships from trading enslaved people with foreign powers. This effectively cut off a substantial portion of the British slave trade. The vote was a result of decades of campaigning by abolitionists like William Wilberforce, and it paved the way for the full abolition of the British slave trade in 1807 (Image 1) (Image 2)
