Minor corner bends, fine and scarce overseas destination. Note: Addressed to Professor A. Schuster (1851 - 1934), who was a German-born British physicist known for his work in spectroscopy, electrochemistry, optics, X-radiography and the application of harmonic analysis to physics. 850 cover image1841: 1 d. pink postal stationery envelope addressed to the Royal Hospital, Dublin cancelled by bold strike of the distinctive MULLINGAR Maltese Cross in black. Reverse with "MULLINGAR" cds of despatch in black (June 25) with Dublin datestamp in red of the following day. An exquisite usage of this Cross, only two recorded in the Jackson / Rockoff Encyclopaedia (part 2, page 207) and in the Karl Louis Card Index Gi = £ 6'500. Note: The addressee, Lt. Colonel Robert James Graves (1796-1853) was an Anglo-Irish surgeon, Fellow of the Royal Society of Physicians of Ireland, Fellow of the Royal Society of London and co-founder of the Dublin Journal of Medical Science. 852 cover image1883: 1 d. brown stationery card, used from South Kensington to New York, with rare "FISHERIES EXHIBITION S.W." Special Event postmark in black dated 28 August 1883, the card cancelled by South Kensington '10' duplex, with ITHACA NEW YORK arrival alongside dated 8 September. Reverse, New York spectacle PAID transit mark dated 7 September. Two tiny tears to right side, faint pressure impression at base and two minor corner creases, well clear of postmark and stamp. V1 = £ 22,500 Note: Though prepared in April 1840 for official use, the plan for special stamps for government use was abandoned, but only after 3323 sheets had been delivered. While these were ordered destroyed, 21 sheets are recorded as having survived, some of which were used for official experimental attempts at cancellation removal.
