British Navy Pigeon Service 1904: H.M. Naval Pigeon Service mesage, dated 16 April 1904, sent from onboard the 'S.S. Belos' which was involved with the salvage operation to recover the British Submarine 'A1', which had sunk
off the coast of Isle of Wight (killing all 17 crew members) following a collision with the merchant ship 'Berwick Castle'. The message sent to the Pigeon Loft at Naval headquaters, from Captain Smith reads: "Received birds from Destroyer and forms
are all correct. One bird has got its eye pecked out. No. 1200 Blue Diver went down at 230am this monring. I blieve they are going to float her again this afternoon. Capt. Bacon is out here. H. Smith." Comes on a page with an unused Pigeon service
form 'Army Book 418' (2) printing on flimsy. In well preserved and clean condition. Some apparent faults to the used message and damage in places, as would be expected for such a mailing, but remarkably legible. Rare; the only message in private
hands from this incident. Ex. The ‘Izhak Barak’ Collection: The Development of Aviation and Transportation of Mail by Air until 1914 (Image 1)
