759 cover imageIncoming Mail: Great Britain 1867 6 d. violet, plate 6, lettered CK, used on a commercial wrapper from London to Bathurst, River Gambia, dated 29 August 1867, tied by a London '48' barred oval, with Late mark (30/8) in red alongside and a manuscript '1' in crayon. To the reverse, a despatch datestamp (29/8) in black and circular segmented quadrant cancel with 'L' in the center. Heavy creasing, stained and some faults. A note on the inside gives details of an arms shipment, "Forty Five Chests Guns, Two Kegs Flints, Eighty Cases Shot and Ball, Eight Hundred and Forty Kegs Gunpowder, Six Hundred and Twenty Bars Iron."
