719 **/*/bof image1853: The so-called "Government Trial Perforation 14", 1 d. plate 74, sheet marginal block of 28, EF-EL/HF-HL (SG Spec. Cat. CE4), as SG 16d in the 1990's catalogued at £ 3'750 each, now no longer listed, unused with large part original gum, some (stronger) creasing and gum thins along creases. The existence of this block was not known until 2004, when it was offered in Paris. BPA certificate (2025) states: "..gauge 14 perforations being unofficially added at a later date.“ Remarks: Perforated stamps from this sheet, which were later attributed to the so-called "Government Trial Perforation 14“ were first reported in 1910 in a marginal block of four, JK/KL, by Charles Nissen in "The British Philatelist". In 1910 Charles Nissen stated in regard of the new find: “We shall be glad if someone, more conversant with the line-engraved series of our stamps, will assist in explaining what to us is at present somewhat of a puzzle“. Some years later a few more singles or pairs came to light and have been spotted in the most renowned collections of their times: Visitors attending the Royal Silver Jubilee Exhibition, organised by the RPSL in May 1935, saw two blocks of four (of which one was the original 1910 find JK/KL), a pair and a single. A block of four lettered ED / FE, ws offered in the Ronald A. G. Lee collection by Stanley Gibbons in 1970, this block adjoins the block of 28 offered here. A pair, GD-GE, also formerly adjoined this block of 28 and to the two singles HD and HE described below, was offered by Harmers of London in the Per Gjerding collection in 1956. Two singles HD and HE, also formerly adjoining to the block of 28 offered here, were sold in 1929 by Charles Nissen for £ 7.10s. to Lady Joicey (HD) and HE was sold in the Wane collection by Harmers in November 1941 for £ 18. Having observed that the perforations on this block were not consistent with comb-perforation equipment available to Somerset House, Simpson & Sargent summarised the situation in their 2006 handbook as follows: “Apart from ruling out Government trial perforation, almost everything else about these perforated stamps remains a mystery. Whatever the original manufacturer’s motive in applying the perforation 14 may have been, that person must surely be deriving much quiet amusement at the enduring credulity of philatelists“. A clandestine perforation 14, that became a curious chapter in British Philatelic History! For further reading see "Pick of the Pack“, GB Journal July/August 2025, pages IX and X). Provenance: Maurice Boule, Paris (2004); collection Ray Simpson (Co-Author of "Stamp Perforation" handbook, by Ray Simpson & Peter Sargent, 2006) (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

723 */bof image1847/54: Embossed 1 s. green, Die 2, an unused corner marginal block of four from top right of the sheet, large margins all round, very clear and sharp embossing, vertical bend at left; minor soiling on face visible on the neck and bust of the Queen and some slight surface rubbing due to attempts to remove same, otherwise of wonderfully fresh appearance and with near full original gum. The sole recorded block of four from Die 2, with just the two blocks known from Die 1 - one of which was recently sold at Corinphila (sale 349, lot 4133) and is not as attractive as this multiple - a unique and outstanding Exhibition piece for the connoisseur.
