90150 cover image1869: Line-Engraved 2 pence blue, plate 14, lettered LG, fresh colour and fine perforations, tied by British PO duplex “A26 GIBRALTAR JY 16 75” to an entire sent to Rome, Italy, endorsed “per 1st Steamer” with handstruck “40” in black and Italian 40 Centesimi postage due stamp alongside tied by “ROME 21 LUG 75” with additional strike to reverse, which is accompanied by several “GENOVA 20 LUG 75” transit marks. A fine and scarce example, sent during the first month of the GPU.Note: Charged as Ship Letter because sent from non-GPU member, and the Italian PO charged 2 x 15c., plus 10c. tip for the ship's captain, thus the 40c. charge. PACKET 19 MAY 99 ”. Reverse, arrival cds “WOLVERHAMPTON MY 20 99”. Damage to front of envelope, clear of adhesive. Tone spot to tips of perforations. Comes with an additional cover, franked with 1938, 1 shilling black & vermilion, tied by cds “KUMASI GOLD COAST 4 DE 32", sent to Malaya and redirected to Penang. Reverse, Malayan postage dues including three 50 cents black (D6), six 3 cents green (D16) and six 20 cents blue (D21). Some imperfection. Scarce high charge of 96 cents. Additionally, 1899, 4 cents on 5 cents carmine (SG 109), special printing, fresh colour, good perforations, tied by cds ”SINGAPORE JA 251900" to small envelope sent to Cheshire, England, endorsed “by German mail”, flap missing. 592 cover image1839: Mercantile Committee, "SPECIMEN OF POSTAL CHARGES IN 1839 / To be Preserved among the Curiosities of any Museum", giant letter-sheet to M.P. Strangeways in London, struck with FREE Crown Circle (5 July, 1839), with contents highlighting anomalies in postage rates of the period, some reinforced folds and prior repairs, as expected with such an item, offered with its companion small envelope, 71mm x 30mm, printed "DOUBLE LETTER / SEVEN GRAINS IN WEIGHT", to D.W. 595 cover image1840: Mulready 1 d. letter-sheet, stereo A18, a used example from London to Newcastle upon Tyne cancelled by red Maltese Cross, two vertical file folds, internally dated "London, 15 May 1840" with interesting content "I enclose you 2 dozen adhesive stamps which may be useful to stick on a letter when you have not the opportunity of paying the postage, the covers are paltry things, I will bring some of them...". A fascinating early document confirming the public's reaction of "useful adhesive stamps" and the almost universal criticism on the William Mulready designs (Image 1) (Image 2)

596 cover image1823 (April 14): Entire letter from Asa Spencer in Philadelphia to Perkins Fairman & Heath (later Perkins Bacon & Petch) in Fleet Street, London, struck on despatch with circular "PHIL / 14 / APR" datestamp in red with "PAID" alongside manuscript "12 c.", reverse with poor framed "LIVERPOOL / SHIP LETTER" in black. The letter refers to the balance of payment due to Spencer under his agreement with the firm. Asa Spencer sailed over to the US together with Jacob Perkins and perfected the Geometric Lathe Rose-Engine. A scarce surviving entire.
