7045 cover imageFrench Post Office in Alexandretta, Outgoing to Aleppo 1869 (March 30): Entire letter from Alexandretta to Marseille, returned to Aleppo, bearing Napoléon perforated 40 c. orange, tied by indistinct Gros chiffres '5079' numeral, matching "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE" cogwheel cds, framed PD and framed "PAQUEBOTS DE LA MÉDITERRANÉE" alongside. Reverse bears Turkey Dulos 1 pi. yellow and 20 pa. green, tied upon arrival in Aleppo by triple-framed ALEP despatch handstamp. The obverse shows also "BEYROUTH SYRIE 1 AVRIL" transit and two MARSEILLE cds's, further "SMYRNE TURQUIE 25 AVRIL" and indistinct "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE" transit cds's along the Turkish franking. Some ink bite, but an interesting combination entire which made its journey twice over the Mediterranean (Image 1) (Image 2)

Reverse bears Turkey Dulos due 1 pi. & 20 pa. brown, tied upon arrival in Aleppo by triple-framed ALEP despatch handstamp. The reverse shows also "CONSTANTINOPLE TURQUIE", "SMYRNE TURQUIE" and "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE" transit cds's as well as bilingual ALEP arrival (Sept 7) cds. 7047 cover imageFrench Post Office in Alexandretta, Ingoing from Aleppo 1871 (Sept 6): Envelope from Aleppo via Alexandretta to Rome, opened up for display, bearing Napoléon laureated 40 c. orange, slightly oxidised in combination franking with Siège 20 c. blue, tied by indistinct Gros chiffres '5079' numeral of Alexandretta, a matching "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE" cogwheel cds and framed PD in black alongside. Reverse bears Turkey Dulos 1 pi. yellow and 20 pa. green, tied by triple-framed Arabic HALEP despatch handstamp with bilingual ALEP despatch (Aug 22), "BEYROUTH SYRIE", "ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE" and BRINDISI transit, as well as ROMA arrival (Sept 18) cds's. Cover shortened at the edges, nevertheless a most attractive combination cover, nicely presenting the 60 centimes rate to Italy, rarely seen in this quality, certs. A. Diena (1951), Brun (2000). Reverse with “BEYROUTH SYRIE" and "PARIS ETRANGER" transit cds's as well as oval TRIEST arrival (Dec 16) datestamp in black. Some wrinkles on the adhesives, nevertheless an attarctive cover paying the new 60 centimes rate valid since July 1871, signed A. Diena & G. Bolaffi (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Reverse bears Turkey Dulos 1 pi. yellow in a strip of three, 20 pa. green & 10 pa. violet, tied by "ALEP TURQUIE" arrival cds (Aug 11) and pen stroke. 326 cover image1840: Envelope with original letter datelined "off Sheerness, Monday night 19th" from Captain Huntley whilst travelling to take up his duties as Lt. Governor of the Settlements on the river Gambia, addressed to his brother in Gloucestershire, rated '1' in red, with London Paid tombstone dated 24 March 1840 also in red. To the reverse, a Deal cds black (20/3). A transcript accompanies the cover, the contents relating to family news. Light soiling and small portion of flap missing, otherwise fine and scarce. Reference: Captain Henry Vere Huntley was Colonial Governor of the Gambia from 10 April 1840 to 31 May 1841. He was knighted on his return and prior to taking up his appointment as Lt. 327 cover image1845: Entire letter from John Robson, St. Marys, Gambia to Camelford, Cornwall, dated 20 January 1845, endorsed "p Sea Witch" top right, rated '8' in black for under half an ounce, with good strike of the step-type 'DEAL / SHIP LETTER' in black (Robertson S8). On reverse a circular London transit in red (28/2). The extensive letter includes reports that they are dispensing with the job of Harbour Master and that he was to be appointed Quarantine Master at £40 per annum. There is also reference to the formation of the new Fitzgerald Club. Note: The 'Sea Witch' was a tea / opium clipper sailing between England and China. 328 cover image1870: Envelope sent from Gambia to Paris, dated 11 February 1870, bearing fair strike of the 'A / GAMBIA' cds (Type 3) in red, alongside a part rate mark at top, with 'PD' circular and London Paid cds (24/2) in red and alongside a 'Angl. / Amb. Calais' double circle in black (24/2). To the reverse, Paris arrival in black (24/2). The envelope has been reduced at top and the wax seal to the flap has been removed. Scarce example. Additionally, comes with an 1879 envelope to London endorsed "per Congo SS" bearing a strike of 'Gambia / Paid' cds, rated '1/3' and with Liverpool Packet mark. Heavy vertical crease, quite fragile and with flaws, but an interesting and scarce UPU rate. A useful duo (2) (Image 1) (Image 2)

Rated '10' in red crayon to cover a double rate envelope. There is a faint London circular (2/8) also in red. Reverse with Edinburgh transit and Preston Pans arrival both in black (3/8).
