The front shows in addition a private Jerusalem cachet from the Carmelite order depicting also the Jerusalem Cross of the Crusader Kingdom, and a French “PAG. ANG: V. BRIND. A MOD.” entry (Oct 21) cds. On reverse part strike of French ambulant cds. As usual for this correspondence, the receiver’s name was cut out of the address tablet and replaced, nevertheless a balanced part cover full of visual appeal showing the crusader’s cross in an official and a private cachet. The reverse was struck in transit by “ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE” cds (Nov 30), Lyon - Paris ambulant and PARIS arrival (Dec 9) cds’s. Reverse of envelope detached from front and rejoined, nevertheless a usage of utmost rarity of the empty Jerusalem Cross of which Livnat can show only five examples between November 1878 and July 1880. Correct UPU rate of 25 centimes each for postage and registration. Cert. Brun (2024). 1945 cover image1889: French Zanzibar cover to the United States with 6-Page US Navy letter. Envelope franked by France Colonies 25 c. black on rose (crease), dated August 1889, tied by ZANZIBAR cds., addressed to Sharon, Massachusetts. Transit Paris Étranger and Boston markings on front and Sharon on reverse (SEP2). Enclosed a remarkable 6-page autograph letter on US Navy stationery, headed July 19th 1889, US Navy, signed by George H. Bray, U.S.S. Swatara, to a friend in Massachusetts. The letter recounts extraordinary events while cruising around Madagascar, including the dramatic pursuit of a fugitive who had murdered the American consul (Nov. 1888) and tales of armed resistance, dealings with natives, false promises of gold and diamonds, and eventual justice. An exceptional historical document linking French Zanzibar postal history with US naval operations off Madagascar and the consular murder affair of 1888.
