7032 cover imageFrench Post Office in Beirut & the postal connections to Jerusalem 1846 (Dec 12): Partially prepaid Entire letter from the Magistrato di Sanita in Genova via Alexandria to the French P.O. in Beirut and from there with the Santelli & Micciarelli private postal service to Jerusalem. Struck on despatch with two-line "GENOVA 12 DIC." datestamp and "P.D." both in red, the latter showing full prepayment to Beirut. The postage of 2.80 Sardinian Lira was noted on the obverse with 0,80 Lira equal to 1 Tuscany Lira weiterfranko were noted on top left. From LIVORNO (Dec 23) French vessels brought it to ALEXANDRIA (Jan 4, 1847) and further there to Beirut (Jan 7). The weiterfranko of 2 Sardinian = French Francs were noted with "f2" in manuscript on obverse. In Beirut, the entire was transfered from the French P.O. to the the Santelli & Micciarelli private postal service which struck its straight-line BEYROUTH on front and brought it to Jerusalem, where the internal endorsement gives January 19 as date of receipt. For the Beirut to Jerusalem part of the journey the receiver had to pay '3' piastres to Santelli & Micciarelli, noted on top of the obverse. The entire was on its way slitted and treated with vinegar which led to discoloration and damage in the address tablet, lateron restored. An exceptional and spectacular entire from the first year of the Beirut to Jerusalem private postal service by Santelli & Micciarelli, one of the large rarities of the postal history of Syria & Holy Land. Note: In August 1845 a bureau de distribution was opened in Beirut. From November of that year, mail from Jerusalem was brought to Beirut, from where it was sent to the west. This connection run from Jerusalem via Ramleh, Jaffa, Caiffa, Acre, Sour, and Saida to Beirut, this private postal service was organized by Mrs. Santelli & Micciarelli from Beirut. In 1852, the newly opened French P.O. in Jaffa became the gateway from Jerusalem to Western Europe and the Levant. The entire of the Sanitary director of Genova to the consul of Sardinia in Jerusalem asks about the actual effectiveness of the sanitary cordon between the Turkish and Syrian regions. In addition to its important postal history content, also a major item with regard to the history of desinfection and purification (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)
