Rücks. zweiter Abschlag des Portofreiheitsstp. als Verschlusstp. Der Inhalt des Briefes betrifft eine Musterlieferung von Uniformen für die Helvetischen Halbbrigaden, welche die Basler Unternehmer Schauenburg und dem Kriegsminister hatten zukommen lassen. Der General beschreibt diese als "des objets de rebuts, par leur qualité et confection" und fordert die Unternehmer auf "de remplir vos engagemens, pour lesquels vous êtes si peu en mesure". Er verspricht, er werde eine Expertenkommission zur Beurteilung der Qualität zukünftiger Produkte einsetzten, welche einen Bericht zu Handen des Kriegskommissars verfassen würde. Von ihm hätten sie zwar "jamais que des procédés justes" zu erwarten, doch es gäbe "aucun contrat, aucun procès verbal, aucune phrase qui dirigeront ma conduite, elle sera toujours franche, loyale et conforme aux intérêts du Gouvernement français". Ein interessanter und sehr seltener Generalsbrief nach Schauenburgs Abberuffung als Kommandant der Armée de Suisse mit diesem aussergewöhnlich seltenen, in der Literatur unbekannten Portofreiheitsstempel. Winkler: nicht gelistet, Reinhard: ebenso. Anmerkung: Alexis Balthazar Henri Schauenburg (1748-1831) befehligte als Général de Division eine der beiden Armeen die im Herbst 1798 in die Schweiz einfielen und errang bei Fraubrunnen und am Grauholz wichtige Siege. Nach der Abberufung seines Vorgesetzten Brune wurde er zum Kommandanten der Besatzungstruppen in der Schwiez ernannt und befehligte von seinem Hauptquartier im Kloster St. Urban (LU) aus den Feldzug gegen die Innerschweiz und die blutige Niederschlagung des Nidwaldner Aufstandes am 9. September 1798. Im Dezember des selben Jahres wurde er durch André Masséna ersetzt und zum Generalinspektor der Infanterie ernannt (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Mai): General André Masséna: Schreiben datiert "Au Quartier-Général de Zurich le Vingt Six floréal l'an 7 de la République française, une et indivisible", mit Briefkopf "ARMÉE Du Danube" / MASSENA, GÉNÉRAL EN CHEF" und eigenhändiger Unterschrift "Salut et amitié, Masséna" an Divisonsgeneral Nicolas Jean-de-Dieu Soult adressiert. Drei Wochen vor der ersten Schlacht bei Zürich diktiert Massena mit dem Schreiben seiner in der Linthebene stehenden Division ihre zur Verteidigung Zürichs gegen die aus dem Raum Vorarlberg vorrückenden österreichischen Truppen des Generals Johann Konrad von Hotze zu beziehenden Stellungen: "Vous dirigerés, mon cher Général, une de vos demi Brigades sur Uznach, en passant par Altendorff, et l'autre se rendra à Rapperschvill (Rapperswil)". Anschliessend seien "des Reconnaissances" über einen möglichen österreichischen Vormarsch bis gen "Vezen" (Weesen) durchzuführen. Ein faszinierendes Zeitdokument aus der Hand dieses legendären Befehlshabers. Anmkerung: Anmerkung: André Masséna (1758-1817) begann seine Militärkarriere unter dem Ancien Régime und tat sich bereits während der Revolutionskriege als einer der begabtesten Generäle der Republik hervor. Nach wichtigen Erfolgen im Italienfeldzug übernahm er 1799 von General Schauenburg das Kommando über die "Armée de Suisse". Mit der legendären Zweiten Schlacht von Zürich Ende September 1799 gelang ihm ein entscheidender Sieg gegen die Alliierten, die er damit Richtung Norden zurückzudrängen vermochte und mit einem Grossteil seiner Armee verfolgte. Von Napoleon einmal als "l'enfant chéri de la victoire" bezeichnet, wird Massena gemeinhin Geschick, Energie und eine gewisse Vorsicht zugesprochen. Gleichzeitig galt er als notorischer Plünderer, der mit seinen hohen Offizieren schon in Italien unzählige Städe und Klöster ihrer Schätze beraubt hatte, welche auch unter seinen Truppen verbreitete Eigenschaft zum lange anhaltenden schlechten Andenken an die "Franzosenzeit" in der Schweiz wesentlich beitrug (Image 1) (Image 2)
