1874 cover image1870 (Dec 20): Entire letter with printed endorsement 'Par Ballon Monté', carried on board balloon no. 46 'Général Chanzy', sent to Preignac, Gironde, dated 19 December 1870, franked with Siège 20 c. blue, tied by Star cancel, with cds. 'Paris (60)' alongside. Carried on the ballon which landed close to Rothenburg, Bavaria, the occupants onboard were imprisoned for two months before being released. As a consequence, the mail was confiscated by the Prussian army, but subsequently delivered. Diagonal creases on left side. Scarce. Cert. Robineau (2004). Ex. Reverse with arrival cds. Beaune in black dated 3 January 1871. vertical filing fold left side well clear of adhesive. Reverse with a Calvados datestamp and two Livarot cds. arrivals dated 24 December 1870. Some small parts of envelope missing, although doesn't detract from what is an appealing 'envelope' example. Reverse, red arrival cds. 'London' dated 17 February 1871. Fine salavaged mail. Letter is addressed to the wife of Professor Jules Emile Péan (1830-1898) a famous surgeon. No arrival; mail from this flight was in the main confiscated by the Prussian army having been jettisoned after the balloon came under heavy gunfire. Minor creasing/wrinkles. Including entire 'Gazette des Absents / Lettre-Journal no. 7', published 12 November 1870, with printed endorsement 'Par Ballon Monté', carried on board balloon no. 30 'Le General Uhrich', sent to Le Havre, franked with Napoléon Lauré 20 c. blue, tied by Star cancel, with 'Paris R. Serpente' cds dated 12 November 1870. Reverse arrival cds. 'Le Havre' dated 24 November 1870. Very clean and fine Unusally well preserved. Comes with another entire with the same Gazette des Absents franked with Siège 20 c. which has been used as a seal and as such torn and damaged, sent to Angers and includes the Supplement enclosed with in No. 7, which announced the introduction of the Dépèche-Réponse (Response Letter) and is accompanied with a Dépèche-Réponse card, franked with a Lauré 5 c. olive-green, tied by a Paris Star cancel in black.
