1857 cover image1870 (Sept 29): Lettersheet sent to Derry, Ireland, carried via Ballon Monté on balloon no. 3 'Etats-Unis', dated 25 September 1870, franked with three singles Napoléon Lauré 10 c. bistre, tied by a fine strike of the star '9' cancel with cds. alongside 'Paris Rue Montaigne' and a boxed 'PD' in red. To reverse an arrival cds. 'Derry' in black dated 21 October 1870. Reduced slightly on one side. Small tear top left corner at front well clear of adhesives. Remarkably well presereved. 1858 image1870: 'Papillon de Metz' with manuscript 'Armée du Rhin Poste Aérostatique' (Army of the Rhine Aerostatic Mail), flown on Ballon Monté no. 8 'Non Dénommé', from Captain Maurice de la Tour d'Auvergne to Madame d'Auvergne at the Château de la Pérellepar Domerat (Allier). This is mail from one of the 8 (of 14) balloons confiscated by the Prussian military, so the document never reached its destination. Rare; one of just two recorded. Note: The message reads: " My dear Louise, I profit from a small balloon, who will take off today to announce that I'm still in good health and that I haven't any injury. Cheer up Louise don't worry too much. Féllicitations à Jeannine for her birthday, kisses for (?)....and for you. Best Wishes to everyone and all my sentiments and be well." 1861 cover image1870 (Nov 2): Ballon Monté entire accompanied with rare Official Message sent by the passenger from the balloon flight. The entire with printed endorsement 'Par Ballon Monté', carried on board balloon no. 22 the 'Fulton', sent to Saint-Gengoux-le-Royal, dated 31 October 1870, franked with Siège 20 c. blue, tied by Paris Star '11', with 'Paris Rue St. Honore' cds. in black alongside. Reverse with a 'Magoh' and 'St. Gengoux-le Royal' arrival cds. dated 4 November 1870. Small corner fault lower right of entire and light vertical filing fold, well clear of adhesive. The rare 'Bureau de Dépèche Officille ou de Service-Official Message' (229 x 159 mm.), black on yellow thin paper, is sent from Angers, where Louis Joseph Ernest Cézanne, the passenger on the Fulton balloon, immediately sent a message to Tours, which reads: "Arrived by balloon from Paris. Health is good. Will arrive at Tours tonight. Telegraph Marguerite" (his wife). The message arrived the same day and was datestamped 'Tours' 2 November 1870. Has been folded vertically in two places, one with a slit and a horizontally crease at base. Very rare Official Message from the corresponding balloon flight sent by the passenger. The only Official Message by a Ballon Monté passenger currently known. Note: The Fulton took-off from Paris at 8:30 am. on 2 November 1870, the pilot was Le Gloarnec, sailor of the marines, his passenger Ernest Cézanne, Engineer of Bridges. They carried four mail bags. They landed safely in an unoccupied zone after enduring severe cold for 6 hours, landing north-west of Chalet, 290km south-east from Paris. They were taken to nearby Angers by locals and then onto Tours the seat of the Government in exile, arriving 3 November at 2 am. The pilot Le Gloarnec died a few days later from pneumonia. Ex. Reverse an Ausburg Main Railway Station two-line handstamp and arrival cds dated 6 November 1870. Small tape adherence to back and apparent flaws, with minor soiling. Rare. Cert. Roumet (2016) Maury = € 4'000 Note The Correspondence Havas was the only agency permitted to correspond with the Allgemeine Zeitung. In the 19th century, the Allgemeine Zeitung was one of Germany's first and most important political daily newspapers. Ex. Reverse with arrival cds. 'Graven Hague' dated 5 December 1870 and a rectangular 'D26' appled due to the lack of postage. Scarce. Maury = € 700+ Note: "Ville d'Orléans" was piloted by Paul Rolier and passenger Léon Bézier. They took off from Paris late at night on 24 November 1870. The balloon was blown off course by strong winds and ultimately landed in Lifjell, Norway, over 1200 kilometers away. The journey was perilous and the crew had to jettison some mail bags to lighten the load and avoid disaster. Ex.
