Chalons 1857/69: 2 d. blue in dull greyish shade with dry print and 1860/67 6 d.
slate-violet, touched to large margins, used on 1863 printed cover from 'Private Observatory, Hobart Town' to London endorsed "via Marseilles", tied by mute obliterators of Hobart with circular "GENERAL POST OFFICE / HOBART TOWN / ♚" datestamp in
red (Aug 22) with London arrival cds (Oct 15) in red alongside. The 10 d. rate was introduced in Great Britain on June 3, 1863 - this cover was mailed at the new rate on the first 'homeward' voyage, carried by the "Madras" to Galle, thence on the

Chalons 1871/91: 6 d. lilac, perf. 11½, two examples used with Sideface 2 d. yellow-green in
a horizontal pair, on 1875 mourning envelope addressed to ZANZIBAR, tied by "Hobart / Tasmania" obliterators (June 11). The addressee "Not found" in Zanzibar and the cover struck with framed "MISSENT TO / PORT ELIZABETH" in black and sent on to Aden.
Reverse with manuscript "Returned to England / address not known, Zanzibar 7.2.76" and Port Elizabeth cds, Aden cds and London arrival (1 May 1876). A most unusual mixed issue franking to an extraordinary destination.rnProvenance: Collection Dr.
