Star, privately perforated 7½, an unused example of fine colour with the perforations touching the design as found in the other known example (Hackmey, sale 1, lot 87, described as unique); unused without gum. The perforations are now believed to be made by a private company to facilitate handling rather than being of Trial status. Extremely rare, one of just two examples recorded. Cert. 6070 imageTypographed by De La Rue 1858: ½ d. dull mauve on unwatermarked blued glazed paper, variety "imperforate x privately rouletted", the used example in a deep rich shade, both vertical sides clearly showing the roulettes with large margin at base and evidence of roulette at top, lightly cancelled by barred obliterator in black. Sold together with an invoice from Angus Galbraith & Simon Mumford (post their departure from Stanley Gibbons in 1983) and a note from the Keeper of the Royal Collection, John Marriott written in 1983 which was attached to a photocopy of the Royal example. Incorrectly listed by both Robson Lowe's Encyclopaedia and SG as clearly on blued paper. The sole example in private hands - the other example being housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III. Unique. Cert. RPSL (1961) Gi = £ 8'000.rnProvenance: Collection J.H.G.
