1256 image1857/58: Covers (2) from Punta de Arenas to 'Neuveville Canton de Berne', Switzerland, both endorsed and mailed "via Panama", one cover struck with octagonal framed "PUNTA / DE / ARENAS" despatch in black mailed via British P.O. in Nicaragua with "GREYTOWN" cds in black (Aug. 19) - earliest recorded usage by seven years (Parmenter, Gordon & Morton CDS 2, previous earliest recorded usage 16 Oct. 1865),- struck in transit in London with "GB / 1F60c." accountancy handstamp. Second cover with octagonal framed "PUNTA / DE / ARENAS" despatch struck in red, US '20' cents charge mark and thence by British ship to destination. Just three stamped covers from the first issue are recorded to Switzerland (see Frajola/Meyer page 134 for one, the others reside in the Todd collection, both bear the 2 reales), these covers believed to be the earliest recorded postmarked usages from Costa Rica to Switzerland. 1259 imageSlave Trade 1824 (Jan. 12): Entire lettersheet from Martin Knight in Havanna, Cuba with red two line handstamp 'Colonies / par Le Havre' addressed to the in the Slave Trade well known Agency 'Herbert' (& Sallier) in Nantes, France, with interesting content:rn"Les dangeousons de mûles sont toujours de la même manière. Il est arrivê dernièrement une gaêlette Espagnoleà B.H; les prix roulent de #3-400....On n'entend guerre plus de pirates au nord de l'île, mais il y a dans ce moment quelques corsaires Indêpendents, peu de navires de guerre...." 'Mûles' is the pseudonym for Slaves. In 1807, both Britain and the United States (1808) banned the Atlantic slave trade. Unlike in the rest of the Americas, the 19th century European-descended Cuban elite did not form an anti-colonial movement. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1260 imageSlave Trade 1825 (March 20): Entire lettersheet from Juara & Martel in Havanna, Cuba with black teo line handstamp 'Colonies / par Bordeaux' to the in the Slave Trade well known Agency 'Herbert' (& Sallier) in Nantes, France, with interesting content concerning 'boucauds' (Slaves) and the fear of American Crusers. Even as the slave trade ceased in other parts of the Atlantic, the Cuban slave trade continued on until 1867. The ownership of human beings as chattel slavery remained legal in Cuba until 1880. 1502 image1900/1906: Collection of twenty four covers and postcards (three with some stamps removed) from the days of Minister Ilg at the Court of Menelik II including a card written by his wife to order fashion and cookery magazines. As Ethiopia did not join the UPU until 1. November 1908 all of the letters and cards bear a double franking with French Somalia stamps. There are also some contents still present. This lot is of significant historical interest and will provide an insight into the history of this contested area.
