6116 image1854: Envelope from the French Army during the 1859 Italian War of Independence, sent from the 'Bureau Central' Fieldpost to Montauban, bearing Napolêon imperf. 20 c. blue Type I, a fresh and fine example with fair to large margins, tied by light "AAG" grill obliterator, matching despatch "ARMÉE D'ITALIE Bau CENTRAL 5 OCT. 59" cds alongside. Reverse with three French ambulant cds's and arrival cds (Oct. 9). Fine cover correctly franked at the military concessionary rate, however taxed, presumably due to a higher weight. A rare usage after the end of the hostilities when a five-division French occupation force remained in Lombardy and Parma from August 1859 until July 1860. Maury = € 1'650. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Matching despatch cds (April 12, 61) alongside, reverse with BERGUES transit cds of the following day. Horizontal file fold away from the franking, some edge wear, nevertheless an appealing cover with an impressive multiple in this rare shade which was in use primarily in 1861. 6127 image1854 (July 20): Entire letter from Le Havre to New York, endorsed "St. Nicolas" and bearing Napolêon imperf. 20 c. blue type I and 40 c. orange, two fresh examples with brilliant colours and and good to large margins, tied by 'Petits Chiffres '1495' lozenge and American '6' (cents) due handstamp in circle, despatch cds and framed PD, both in red alongside. Vertical file fold well away from the adhesives, nevertheless an exceptional cover with this red cancellation paying correctly rate to the USA with an American vessel, in this case the 'St. Nicolas'.
