Rayon I light blue
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
7283 imageSwitzerland 1851 (Aug. 1): Cover from Luzern to Cour St. Maurice, Doubs bearing Rayon II Plate B1 Type 28 from the upper left group in combination with a left marginal example of the Rayon I light blue Stone M Type 25 from the lower group, both tied by pen strikes in red, LUZERN despatch cds and French "SUISSE MAICHE" entry cds, both in red alongside. Reverse with Maîche transit cds and partial St. Maurice arrival datestamp. The Rayon II is touched at top, the Rayon I light blue is a splendid copy from the very rare 'missglückter Stein', the cover with some wear, nevertheless a most interesting and scarce usage. Cert. Kimmel (2000) SBK = CHF 7'000.rnNote: The sender paid the cover correctly for the third rayon within Switzerland but neglected that such a part payment was not accepted in the January 1850 postal treaty with France. The cover was found by the French postal authorities to have in addition double weight with "2 ports" noted on top of the cover. The sender therefore had to pay '8' décimes upon receipt as if the cover was sent without any adhesives. rnReference: Noted in Blaickner - Schweizer Auslandsfrankaturen zur Zeit der Rayon-Marken (1850-1854) as one of five known items send in the January 1850 rate which was valid until the end of 1851, when the new Swiss Franc was introduced. This is the earliest known cover in this rate. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5)

7290 imageSwitzerland, ingoing to Syria 1875 (Oct 12): Cover from Zofingen to Aleppo, bearing 1868 25 rp. green, a fresh example with usual perf., tied by clear ZOFINGEN despatch cds with a perfect information strike and "P.D." handstamp alongside. Reverse with TORINO and BRINDISI cds's, Italian P.O. "ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO" (Oct 21), French P.O.'s "ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE" (Oct 29), "BEYROUTH SYRIE" (Nov 2) and "ALEXANDRETTE SYRIE" (Nov 5) transit cds's. Upon arrival the PD handstamp was crossed out and the cover was taxed with '9' décimes. Attractive and interesting cover.rnNote: In October 1875, the GPU treaty was already in force in Switzerland and the majority of the European countries, while France did not join earlier than January 1st, 1876. The 25 rp. franking and the PD handstamp have therefore applied erroneously thinking that the GPU rate was also valid to the French P.O. in Alexandretta. However at that time point, the bilateral contracts where still in force with 90 centimes for an unpaid letter to a French P.O. in the Levant. The last part of the journey from the French office in Alexandretta to Aleppo was presumably done by courrier. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
